Flat River Outreach Ministries Offers Free Tax Preparation

It’s that time of year once again.  Households and businesses must file taxes by mid-April.  Flat River Outreach Ministries (FROM) along with United Way and IRS is offering free tax preparation for those who qualify.  This is the ninth year FROM has offered this service.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a government initiative in which IRS-certified volunteers assist low income families with their taxes.  Prior to working with FROM VITA did not have a location on the east side of Kent County.  The group worked with FROM to establish a site.

The past two years this program helped nearly 300 households each tax season.  Over $350,000 in reimbursements were sent to those who used the service each year.  Qualifying families must have an annual income less than $62,000.

On Tuesdays starting February 7 VITA representatives will be available in the FROM office.  The last day to receive tax preparation help is April 18.  An appointment must be made in order to take advantage of this service.  United Way should be contacted at 2-1-1 to schedule a morning, afternoon, or evening appointment.

A special Thank You Veterans Tax Day is scheduled for Wednesday, February 15 from 10am – 4pm at FROM.  Any veteran can stop by during these walk-in hours for free tax preparation service.  There is no income limitation for veterans on this day.

FROM continues to help those needing assistance great and small in the Lowell community.  Visit their webpage to find out more about the services they offer and how you can volunteer to help their local efforts.
