5 Most Popular Articles on Lowell’s First Look for October 2024

In October, the weather might have said summer, but the news definitely said fall. While the presidential election is the main event nationally for this year’s general election, the Lowell Area Schools Board of Education race is the one everyone is watching locally. On Lowell’s First Look, we had profiles of all five actively running candidates as well as weekly Q&As.

Two of those profiles made the top five for last month while the other three stories covered business and city government updates. Here are the top five stories from October 2024.

5. City Council Recap: Line Shack Sale Finally Complete

Lowell Light & Power just wanted to sell an unused building…and that touched off a city government saga that spanned nearly five years. However, Lowell City Council finally completed the sale last month, at a price that was less than half the highest bid received on the property. The meeting recap highlighting completion of the sale – among other business – was the fifth most-read story on Lowell’s First Look in October.

4. Bobbie Sue’s Roadhouse Restaurant Taking Shape in Lowell

This article about the planned opening of Bobbie Sue’s Roadhouse has been a perennial favorite, hitting the top five list multiple times since it was initially published in the summer. However, this may be the last time you see this article mentioned in a monthly recap. We predict it will be replaced with a more recent article that reviews the restaurant now that it has opened.

3. Board of Education Candidate Profile: Brian Krajewski

Brian Krajewski is the current president of the Lowell Area Schools Board of Education and one of six candidates listed for election to the board on the November ballot. Five of those candidates are actively seeking election while the sixth person suspended his campaign in the summer. We wrote profiles of all five active candidates, and Krajewski’s takes the number three spot for the month.

2. Board of Education Candidate Profile: Sharon Shah

The second most popular article in October was another school board candidate profile. This one was for Sharon Shah, one of two challengers on the November ballot. The mother of a senior at Lowell High School, this is Shah’s first time running for the LAS Board of Education, although she did try for a spot on Lowell City Council last year.

1. King Milling Names New President

Topping the news for last month was an announcement that Patrick Doyle will be taking over as president of King Milling Co. He represents the fifth generation of the Doyle Family to head the Lowell mill, which is the oldest continuously operating business in Kent County. Doyle says running the company has long been a dream of his but notes that his uncle and dad – the previous presidents – aren’t going anywhere. They will continue to help guide the company in other capacities.
