This Weekend in Lowell: Time to Start Taxes…or Take a Walk

Update: Since posting this, we were informed there ARE some special events going on this weekend in Lowell.

First, for your funny bone, Larkin’s The Other Place is hosting a comedy show featuring Jerry Donovon. It starts at 8pm on Saturday night. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door.

Or if you’re the type who would rather be on the stage than in the audience, you can audition for a part in the LowellArts production of Family Matters: A Playwright Festival. Adult actors can audition at 1pm on Saturday or 6:30pm on Monday at the new LowellArts building downtown (formerly Cousin’s Hallmark). More information about the performance is on their website.

Whew! You might just be saved from doing taxes this weekend.

After a few wet and dreary days, the rain should let up this weekend, making this your chance to escape to the outdoors for some fresh air. Or if it’s still too cold for you, maybe you could use this weekend to work on your taxes, visit a museum or hit the movies.

Here are some ideas for a laid back weekend.

Taxes: Get Organized Early This Year

Yes, you do still have nearly three months until the April 15th filing deadline. And it’s true that businesses have until January 31st to send you all those fun forms you need to complete your tax return. However, there is no time like the present to start getting organized.

Pull together the documents you have and designate a folder where you can file the others as they begin to trickle in. When it comes time to actually file, don’t forget help is available from Flat River Outreach Ministries. If your household income is less than $62,000, you may qualify for free tax preparation and e-filing services. You must make an appointment through the United Way (one of FROM’s partners in the program) to use this service, and they will begin booking those next week. Call 2-1-1 on MONDAY or later to reserve your time.

Now is also a good time to mention that your refund might get held up this year if you receive either the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit. The PATH Act of 2015 – that stands for Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes – requires the IRS to hold any refunds that include those credits until February 15. The delay is intended to give the government time to verify the refund and avoid fraud.

While the delay isn’t lengthy, it’s something to keep in mind if you file early and are hoping for a fast refund.

Go For a Walk in the Woods

The snow is gone (at least temporarily) so now is your chance to get out and stretch your legs without fighting through snow drifts.

Lowell, of course, has plenty of trails and sidewalks ready and waiting for your feet, but sometimes it’s nice to get off the beaten path. You can head up to the Wittenbach Wege Nature Center on Vergennes Road for a stroll through the woods.

There is typically a guided walk at 2pm on Sundays if you’d rather not go it alone. What’s more, the building at the center should be open from 1-4pm so you’ll have a chance to warm up and view their displays when you get back.

Indoor Activities: Head to the Museum or Movies

Assuming you’re all shopped out from the holidays, you could head to downtown Lowell for some entertainment instead.

If you haven’t already been for a visit, the Lowell Area Historical Museum is one of the nicest little museums around, if we do say so ourselves. Stop by and learn all about our community’s past, including its early history and highlights from the Showboat.

The museum is open from 1-4pm on both Saturday and Sunday and is located on the corner of Hudson and Main Streets.

For – dare we say? – more modern entertainment, you could head down the road to the Ada Lowell 5 where the following movies are showing:

  • Patriots Day
  • Underworld: Blood Wars (sounds intense, eh?)
  • Sing
  • Hidden Figures
  • Passengers
  • Why Him?
