Arrow Readers on the Move Encourages Elementary Students to Read Over Summer Break

Once again this summer, Arrow Readers on the Move will offer test taking opportunities for students who recently completed kindergarten through fifth grade.  Books can be checked out of school libraries or KDL branches in Lowell and Alto. Students will also be able to win prizes for accomplishing grade level goals throughout the summer.

Continued Reading Encouraged
Elementary school students are familiar with the Accelerated Reader program, also known as AR.  Books are checked out from school libraries such that students read at a level which suits them.  And book selection is up to the student so he or she is in control of content within a level. The color and number of dots on the binding of a book indicates the reading level.  The back cover has information about the book level, number of points earned after completing a test, and the quiz number associated with the book.

Stop by the following locations throughout summer vacation to stay in reading mode.  KDL branches also offer summer reading programs, which encourage exploring stories through books.  Through the KDL website, books can be searched by AR level, making finding appropriate books a lot easier.  What’s even better about using this search feature is any books found can be placed on hold and sent to Englehardt or Alto library for easy pick up.  Or use the AR Bookfinder website to search by book title to determine if it’s part of the program and what level the book falls under.  This site also has an option for searching for books by level.

Elementary school students should know their current AR level based on progress throughout the school year.  This is the level which should be the focus for the summer. The following list matches AR book dots found on the spine of each book with their corresponding reading level.

Sparkle Books-below first grade level have a star in the dot
Red dot – Level 1 (first grade, 1.0-1.9)
Green dot – Level 2
Yellow dot – Level 3
Blue dot – Level 4
Orange dot – Level 5
Neon Yellow dot – Level 6
Neon Dark Green dot – Level 7
Neon Light Green dot – Level 8

Tuesdays and Wednesdays during June and July, students are encouraged to attend as many dates and locations as they’d like – even in the same day!  A parent or guardian must stay with students at these locations as they take tests and check out books. A handful of teachers and staff will be available to help kids take quizzes, as well as find and check out books.  Books checked out from school libraries can be returned to any location. Books checked out from KDL locations can also be returned to other KDL locations. However, books checked out from school libraries should not be returned to KDL branches and books checked out at KDL branches should not be returned to school libraries.
