Arrow Readers on the Move Promotes Summer Reading

Summer break may be on the minds of Lowell Area Schools students, but that doesn’t mean learning should be placed on hold until August 20 when school resumes.  Once again this summer, Arrow Readers on the Move will take place giving elementary school students the opportunity to read books, take tests, earn points, and win prizes.

Read Books, Take Tests, Earn Points, Receive Prizes

Tuesdays and Wednesdays in June and July at locations throughout the community, elementary students attending Lowell Area Schools (LAS) can check out books and take Accelerated Reader (AR) tests.  Students are also encouraged to check books out from Englehardt and/or Alto KDL branches.

Students are accustomed to the AR program as part of their reading at school.  Books are selected according to the student’s reading level and interest. Book levels follow approximate reading standards throughout elementary school.  A book level 1.4 signifies a student who is in the fourth month of first grade should be able to read the book if he or she is reading at grade level. Book level 3.8 indicates the book is for a student in the eighth month of third grade.  The AR Bookfinder website can be used to see if a book is part of the program and what level it is rated.  The site will also provide the quiz number which will be needed when students are ready to take tests.

LAS representatives will be available at each Arrow Readers on the Move time and location with iPads equipped for taking quizzes.  Students can attend as many of the dates and times as they’d like even if they are on the same day. Children must be accompanied by an adult who remains at the event while students take quizzes and check out books.  Students may also read during the event and then take a quiz.

AR points will accumulate with each quiz that is taken.  Goals for each grade level have been established and once reached, a prize is earned.  Arrow Readers on the Move would like to thank B.C. Pizza for helping with some of the prizes for this year.

New this year, mystery readers are being scheduled to appear at all of the Arrow Readers on the Move locations.  Stop by, read and check out books, take quizzes, and you may have a familiar face from Lowell Area Schools there to read a book!

Combine with KDL Reading Programs and Even the Kent County Youth Fair

Summer reading at KDL branches started this week for people of all ages.  Books read for Arrows on the Move can also count toward the KDL Summer Reading program.  Sign up for the program at any branch or online.  Students in K-3 can also count Arrow Readers on the Move and Summer Reading books toward the Mission: Read program, also going on through KDL branches.  How can it get any better than reading one book that can count toward three reading programs?

The Kent County Youth Fair will once again offer free rides for kids for completing reading this summer!  Reading for Rides Day will be on Tuesday, August 6 during fair week.
