Chair-A-Tee Profile: Meet Candice

Candice Bowne is a lifelong Lowell resident.  She decided to participate in Chair-A-Tee because it’s like “donation teamwork” as she put it.  “I get to be a big part of the donation, even though it didn’t all come from my bank account, but instead, from my time and art piece!” she says.  Bowne’s chair can be seen at the Lowell Area Chamber building along the Riverwalk.

Deciding to Design
As a nurse for an ENT surgeon in Grand Rapids Bowne designs angels for patients visiting the office.  The goal of her creation was to let those with cancer or a chronic illness they are not alone in times of hardship and celebration.  “Our patients truly seem to be touched by this small gift, knowing that we are praying for them and doing everything we can to assist God in keeping them healthy on this side of the clouds!” reflects Bowne.  She believes the power of prayer is one way she can show support.  The angels she creates are a reminder to patients that they are not alone.

Bowne describes her piece as “supportive” and “faith driven”.  She feels these two aspects are what motivates and impacts the lives of those who are going through a cancer journey or have been on one in the past.  “Support they receive from family and friends, and how their Faith in God carries them through this battle. I think my chair lets the owner know they are in good hands and definitely not alone!” responds Bowne when asked how she would describe the design of her chair.

Bowne has been an artist all of her life saying she has been bitten by the “Art Bug” her whole life.  “I would look at something old or damaged and say ‘I’ll bet I can fix that and make it gorgeous!’” she says reminiscing.  High school art teacher Robin White and her mom Ruth Wood have been mentors and inspirations when it comes to art.

Bowne yearns for the day when kids ask “What is cancer?” as if it never existed drawing a parallel with kids currently asking what a phone booth is.  Until then she’ll do what she can to support friends, family, and patients who deal with the disease.  “I think it’s an awesome way to raise money and have some fun along the way with the talents God Blessed us with!  You don’t have to have tons of money to help raise it! Just use your talents to the best of your abilities! You may be pleasantly surprised how your small contribution may lead to a much bigger one to support an amazing cause!”

Candice Bowne’s work of art can be seen and bid upon at the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce until August 18.  All of the chairs will be on display at LowellArts from August 22 until August 26.  Final bids are due by 3pm on August 26.
