City Press Conference: Feb. 22, 1018 Flood Update

City Manager Mike Burns addressed media outlets this afternoon, providing the latest information pertaining to the rising waters within city limits.  Burns read a prepared statement before taking questions.

Currently water continues to rise along the Grand River.  Recreation Park has nearly reached buildings used by the Kent County Youth Fair.  Water has begun to flood the streets at the S. Jackson and Front Street.  S. Jackson is currently closed in this area as the water level is expected to continue to rise.  The road is expected to reopen Monday morning according to the Lowell Police Department Facebook page.

Approximately 30 homes on the south side of Main Street will have to deal with excessive flooding.  Residents in this area have been notified by the Lowell Police Department about the rising water.  Should anyone wish to have power turned off ahead of flooding, Lowell Light & Power can be contacted.  There are no power outages anticipated during the peak of the flooding event.

If you are traveling and come across a road covered with water, do not attempt to pass through.  If you cannot see through the water to solid ground it is unsafe to pass.  The road could be washed out, the water could be deeper than anticipated, and there could be a current in the water which could have enough force to move a vehicle.

The city is not providing sandbags but through a donation from Timpson, sand can be picked up in the municipal parking lot north of City Hall.  Locally, Bernard’s Ace Hardware has bags and Self Serve Lumber is looking into being able to have them in stock.
