Fall Activities Debut at Olin Farm

Now that the unofficial end of summer has taken place many start thinking about fall activities.  Traveling along Vergennes it’s hard not to have noticed the Raggedy Andy made from hay bales which appears each fall at Olin Farm.  This year the Olin family is inviting guests to go through a corn maze and take a tractor ride.  They started offering these two activities Labor Day weekend and will continue through the month of October.

A Family Affair
The 120 acre farm has been in the Olin family for over 70 years.  For the past 15 years Raggedy Andy has appeared in the fall to watch drivers as they pass by.  Doug and Suzanne Olin decided to open up the farm so visitors could go through a corn maze and on a hayride.  “[It would be] another fun adventure and we like kids.  [We] also wanted to share the beauty of our farm!” says Suzanne Olin about the decision to offer fall opportunities.

The Olins happily greet people from a custom-built cabin where customers pay admission.  Visitors may also be greeted by Jack, the family dog.  And those fortunate enough to have the Olin’s grandson Gabe along on the hayride he’ll tell you all about various things on the farm.

The Corn Maze and Hayride
Looking at an aerial view of the corn maze will reveal the image of a horse.  Not any old horse but a Clydesdale.  Purchased as colts from Budweiser, Moses and Solomon stand tall in an enclosure.  They too welcome guests to the farm.  It’s hard to appreciate the size yet gentleness of these giants until you’re standing next to one – or two.  The corn maze horse theme has individuals and families looking for the ears of the horse as their final destination.  Get a ticket and bring it to the cabin to exchange for a treat.  It’ll take an average of 20-30 minutes to complete the maze.

The hayride should be considered of the best around.  Doug Olin drives the tractor drawn wagon(s) saying one of the best ways to go on a hayride is by laying down in the hay.  Visitors will tour the countryside traveling through fields and a wooded area.  The 30 minute adventure will leave participants with a greater appreciation for Mother Nature’s beauty.  Plan a ride at sunset or as fall colors take over the landscape.
