Ferris Students Need Lowell Residents’ Help for Class Project

Social work students from Ferris State University are asking Lowell residents to complete a survey as part of a class project. The students are in a community and group class which is designed to prepare participants to work with groups such as community non-profits. As part of the course, students are asked to work together to assist a population and organization of their choice.

“My group members and I decided we wanted to put our focus on vulnerable populations,” says student Mikaila Bennett. One member of the group hails from Lowell, and she suggested working with Alpha Family Center. As part of the class project, students have created a survey to gauge the community’s understanding of the center’s services and their likelihood in using them.

“Our group members and I have a heart of passion for helping organizations that offer these services,” Bennett says. “Some women may feel alone if they become pregnant unexpectedly, and we want this survey to help these women feel as if they have someone in their corner.”

The survey is brief and does not require any identifying information, although there is an option to leave an email address if desired. Questions cover whether respondents would consider using Alpha Family Center for services and how familiar they are with the various programs available.

Once the survey is completed, results will be shared with Christa Wetzel, executive director of Alpha Family Center. However, for the survey to accurately reflect community perceptions, students are hoping a number of Lowell residents will be willing to complete the survey by Monday, December 7.
