Furry Friday

The following animals are available for adoption.  If you find an animal you’d like to adopt please contact the organization directly.  Lowell’s First Look does not assist with the adoption process.  And if you’re looking to add to your family and don’t see an animal below, each organization has additional animals looking for new homes.   Pet profiles and photos are provided by each organization.

Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary

Those involved with Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary take pride in finding the right home for dogs in their care. Here are their pets of the week.

Mr. Huxley has your quintessential husky personality – striking a curious and seemingly contradictory balance between being incredibly cuddly and aloof and independent. He seems to like everyone he meets, but once he decides someone is a pal, he lets his warm and fuzzy interior shine. Huxley would love to find an active home, that wants to include him in all their adventures.

Mr. Talo came to Mackenzie’s after his owner passed away. This lovable cuddle bug wants nothing more than a person to call his own again. Talo has a sweet and kind hearted nature, and would be happiest in a home without too much traffic – human or canine. A laid back lifestyle with naps in a cozy bed, lots of pets and scratches, and walks on sunny days is right up his alley.

Hearts of Hope Dog Rescue

Hearts of Hope Dog Rescue look to find dogs and sometimes cats in their care forever homes with the help of foster homes.  Here are their pets of the week.

Petunia Popcorn is a 9 lb 7 week old beagle mix puppy that is absolutely the most cuddly, rolly polly, fun loving baby hound girl ever! Petunia adores playing with other doggie siblings, foster siblings and with her foster mom, but if any of those are out of her sight, she has no problem singing the songs of her ancestors at an extremely loud volume. She would appreciate a family who relishes this found talent and who will eventually allow her to claim your bed, life and heart. Because of her beautiful voice, and the inherited ancient nose talent of the acclaimed beagle, she will need a single family home only, no apartments, and a secure physical fenced in yard. She also would do best with a doggie sibling or two, who can be there the few hours you can’t, and who will show her the ropes as a secure member of her new family! If you are a true beagle person you know why her needs are necessary! Please no tiny human kids, as this budding diva will bite in play as she learns what the world around her is all about. Older respectful children would be fine. Petunia is starting her potty training, will be spayed, microchipped and given age appropriate vaccinations with mandatory completing puppy vaccinations scheduled at our vet in Grand Rapids that adopter will need to bring her to. Petunia’s adoption fee is $350.

Have you been looking to add a male model to your home?  Well …. You. Are. In. Luck.  Gulliver is looking for a home to model in!  He is a 12 year old border collie mix who weighs approximately 50 pounds.  He is blind and has some arthritis so a home with no steps or a single step to get in and out is what he is looking for.  Gully’s foster family thought he was deaf (and he certainly doesn’t hear well) but his foster mom was telling him he is a good boy and a single tail wag on his second day with them told us he heard her and knew what she was was saying. Each day since, his tail has wagged a little more. He is old, stubborn, but grateful and witty. Now here’s where the modeling comes in.  He loves getting his picture taken – he wags his tail when he hears the camera shutter sound.  See!  He’s a model!

Gulliver’s two favorite things are being outside wandering around a yard on his own and scratches and pets.  He loves wandering around, sniffing, and laying in a cool spot outside.  A fence or a yard with distinguishable landmarks (rocks, logs, landscaping) would keep him safe at home.  And his favorite thing … LOVE.  He will do ANYTHING for you to keep petting him and scratching him.

Gulliver would be fine with calm dogs, cats, and kids.  Are you Gulliver’s retirement home?  He is neutered, current on his vaccines and microchipped.  Gulliver’s adoption fee is $175.

Holliday’s Exotic Avian Rescue Team

HEART specializes in rehoming birds when all other alternatives have been considered. Based in Lowell, birds are fostered primarily in Lowell or White Pigeon. Here are their pets of the week.

Casper and Bello will be adopted together, they are both MALE umbrella cockatoos. Casper has a couple of toes on either foot that have been broken in the past but have since healed and cause no issues. By adopting two, you are greatly reducing a lot of the behavioral problems that could arise but it also means they can only go to a home who has large bird experience. Bello is a handsome umbrella cockatoo who is 19 years old and was very much loved by his previous homes. Unfortunately after COVID hit, it was very apparent to his owner that she could not provide him with what he needed to be happy, which is the companionship of another cockatoo. Both boys are eagerly looking for a family of their own, they are both full or life and chatterboxes. They will require someone who has previous experience with big birds but we are confident they will settle and become part of the family in no time. They have been in a very busy household and have adjusted well with other birds and dogs. We never recommend them with small children, but preteens and up would be fine. We try to set up our new bird owners the best we can so $250 of your adoption fee is used to purchase you a one year membership in Level One and the Parrot Project through the Animal Behavioral Center. This membership give you the tools needed to establish a relationship, target training, learning how to prevent negative behaviors like screaming and biting(which can be a real challenge with cockatoos). It also provides you with a community of supportive knowledgable bird owners led by Lara Joseph.

If you think you would be a good fit or are interested in being considered for adoption, please fill out our adoption application.
