Furry Friday

The following animals are available for adoption.  If you find an animal you’d like to adopt please contact the organization directly.  Lowell’s First Look does not assist with the adoption process.  And if you’re looking to add to your family and don’t see an animal below, each organization has additional animals looking for new homes.   Pet profiles and photos are provided by each organization.

Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary

Those involved with Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary take pride in finding the right home for dogs in their care. Here are their pets of the week.

Every dog has a story, and so do I. My name happens to be Storie as well. I was found as a stray. I was hit by a car while I was running. Boy was that tramatic. I am doing fine now. I was taken to MAS and I had a surgery and rehabilitation. I am fine walking by other dogs, but if I do say so myself I would probably be best as an only dog for the time being. I would not like to hurt my hip again. I possibly could live with an older dog that would not be too rambunctious. So older kids may be best as well. Little toddlers climbing on me would not be the best. I could see myself being with someone who would like to go on walks and spend time with me, sort of like a best friend. I could stand a little spoiling if you feel the need to, as I have been through a lot already in my short life.

Indie has been at Mackenzie’s for almost four years. Four years is a long time in dog years. She likes to spend her days in the adoption coordinators office, she is such a loving and sweet girl. She has not found a dog that she can be in a play group with, and she does not like cats as she has a large prey drive.

Hearts of Hope Dog Rescue

Hearts of Hope Dog Rescue look to find dogs and sometimes cats in their care forever homes with the help of foster homes.  Here are their pets of the week.

Fred is an approximately one and a half year old ball of energy. He loves to play with toys, in particular squeaky toys and his favorite game is to chase the flirt pole. He’s fully house trained and crate trained and will jump in your face when he has to go outside. At first you think he wants to lick and snuggle but no he just wants to go outside. He walks well on leash during training walks but isn’t quite ready to heal during leisurely walks. Fred loves to go out on walks and hikes and loves to explore and has gotten really good about checking in with you. In the mornings, he gets his exercise by playing chase with the resident dog which he looks forward to.  We don’t really know about his breed but he sure acts like a working dog and enjoys working for his food, attention and learning new tricks. He’s very smart and picks up on new commands and tricks pretty easily. Fred is not a social butterfly and doesn’t like strangers in his bubble, but he’s neutral on walks and out and about. Inside the home, he just retreats to his safe spot. Fred came to us very scared with no confidence and would try to get away from any situations that scared him. After teaching him the foundations, we have started exposing him to new environments and situations to proof his new skills and he continues to improve and is becoming a lot more relaxed.

Fred is looking for a home with another confident canine to play with, show him the ropes and teach him that people can be fun. He would do best in a home without small kids and will need someone committed to continuing his training to become the confident dog we continue to see emerge as he settles.  His adoption fee is $250.

Buttercup is an approximately 4 year old shepherd/chihuahua/(maybe Aussie mix?) who is 35 lbs of playfulness and snuggles! He thrives with routine and consistency. He starts his mornings and evenings with a low-key game of fetch. (Seriously, so low-key you can have your cup of coffee with Gizmo in your lap looking out the window while playing fetch with Buttercup). Buttercup loves ALL the toys and it is not uncommon to see him strolling around casually with one in his mouth. After work, he enjoys playing chase with his brother and schooling him in laps around the yard. He is an escape artist, so a securely fenced in yard and no unsupervised outdoor time is a requirement in his forever home. Buttercup LOVES to snuggle and be in your lap but is extremely respectful of furniture so you’ll have to join him on the ground. He is also a jumper and barker when he gets excited. Because of his tendency to bark, a shared-wall home (condo, townhome, apartment) may not be the best fit for him. He is good on a leash but needs help with learning a few manners, basic commands, and channeling a little stubbornness/snarkiness at times. Kids no younger than 10yrs for Buttercup would be best. Dog introductions are very much still a work in progress. Buttercup would do well as an only dog as he is quite picky about his dog friends, but does pretty well with his brother. When he has completed the second round of heartworm treatment (covered by the rescue) he would love to live a more active lifestyle! If you need a jogging buddy, Buttercup jogs alongside pretty well. He is neutered, up to date with vaccines and his adoption fee is $275.

Gizmo and Buttercup are a bit of a unique situation; they came to Hearts of Hope as bonded brothers and could potentially be adopted to the same forever home if the right fit is out there… A home together would require at least two adults (as they both are quite needy for one-on-one attention), no other pets (if they are kept together as a duo), and no young children. A fenced yard would be ideal, as they love to run and play chase with each other!

Holliday’s Exotic Avian Rescue Team

HEART specializes in rehoming birds when all other alternatives have been considered. Based in Lowell, birds are fostered primarily in Lowell or White Pigeon. Here are their pets of the week.

Casper and Bello will be adopted together, they are both MALE umbrella cockatoos. Casper has a couple of toes on either foot that have been broken in the past but have since healed and cause no issues. By adopting two, you are greatly reducing a lot of the behavioral problems that could arise. Bello is a handsome umbrella cockatoo who is 19 years old and was very much loved by his previous homes. Unfortunately after COVID hit, it was very apparent to his owner that she could not provide him with what he needed to be happy, which is the companionship of another cockatoo. Both boys are eagerly looking for a family of their own, they are both full or life and chatterboxes. We are confident they will settle and become part of the family in no time. They have been in a very busy household and have adjusted well with other birds and dogs. We never recommend them with small children, but preteens and up would be fine. We try to set up our new bird owners the best we can so $250 of your adoption fee is used to purchase you a one year membership in Level One and the Parrot Project through the Animal Behavioral Center. This membership give you the tools needed to establish a relationship, target training, learning how to prevent negative behaviors like screaming and biting(which can be a real challenge with cockatoos). It also provides you with a community of supportive knowledgable bird owners led by Lara Joseph.

If you think you would be a good fit or are interested in being considered for adoption, please fill out our adoption application.
