Hudson Street Blocked After Police Chase, Accident

Drivers heading north into Lowell today needed to seek an alternate route. The city’s main entry point on Hudson Street near the Grand River was blocked while police processed a crime scene.

According to Police Chief Chris Hurst, the Lowell Police Department received a Flock hit on a stolen vehicle entering town. The Flock cameras are devices that capture license plate numbers and run them through a database to check for alerts related to the vehicle, such as thefts, warrants and Amber Alerts.

When an officer attempted to pull over the vehicle in question, it took off rather than stopping. Unfortunately, it hit another vehicle, and the driver then led police on a foot chase before being apprehended. Both the suspect and the driver of the vehicle he hit were both transported to the hospital.

The Grand River bridge heading into town was blocked for several hours on Wednesday, July 17, with traffic diverted away from it. There were several trucks with manufactured housing units on them on the bridge, but they were not involved in the incident. Instead, they were stuck on the bridge while police cleared the scene.

As of 2pm, the scene had apparently been cleared and the road reopened, according to a Lowell’s First Look reader.

Hurst noted that a drone was brought in from the county to take aerial images of the site.

More information about the incident will be released later, according to Hurst.

Note: This article was updated at 2:20pm on July 17 to reflect that the road had been reopened.

  1. So how does the Flock cameras keep residents safe? Sounds like it caused injury…put officers in danger…created traffic issues oh and costs money to operate. But don’t worry the weed money pays for it.
