Indivisible Lowell Choosing Positive Action

Indivisible Lowell is not registered as a group affiliated with the national group Indivisible, but formed in response to the larger organization.  There are nearly 10 groups registered with Indivisible in the Grand Rapids area.  When originally formed the group was named Indivisible Women but it has since dropped “Women” to be able to encompass men who support their goals.  And while leaning politically left, anyone is welcome to attend meetings.

Gathering Locally
Started by Sharon Ellison and Nancy Misner the newly formed Indivisible Lowell met in May for the first time.  The two women decided to form the group after attending the women’s march in DC in January of this year along with others from the Lowell area.  The duo had been and continue to go to meetings in Grand Rapids.  They were receiving feedback from some in the community prompting them to start a local group interested in standing up for issues they believe in.

Indivisible Lowell strives to resist policies which harm others and make changes.  Ellison says, “We promote positive action.  Sometimes that means attending a protest against something we feel strongly about and calling our elected officials when we want to make sure they know how we want to be represented.”

Indivisible Lowell currently have 36 members who regularly attend meetings.  Anyone in the Lowell area is invited to meetings.  Invitations about meeting date, time, and location are sent via email and by word of mouth.  Those seeking information about the group can send an email to [email protected].

Monthly Meetings
The inaugural meeting was one of sharing information and getting to know those interested in the group.  A representative from Debbie Stabenow’s office spoke at the second meeting.  During the group’s July meeting, approximately 25 people in attendance listened to a panel of four discuss politics.  Only one of the panelists supported Trump. Ellison and Misner said they attempted contacting conservative groups and individuals but all declined or were not available.  Members of the panel answered questions about various political topics as part of a “listen and learn” meeting.

In September the group’s meeting will feature “Dreamers” as guest speakers.  High school and college students who are subject to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) legislation will tell their stories.  Anyone interested in hearing these students is welcome to come.  The meeting will take place on September 26 from 6:30pm-8pm at the Lowell United Methodist Church located at 621 E. Main Street.
