LAS Superintendent Notifies Parents of Threatening Message

If you have a student enrolled in Lowell Area Schools, you may have heard rumblings that a threatening call was made to a school building last week. However, the district has been silent on the matter until today.

This morning, Lowell Area Schools Superintendent Greg Pratt sent an email to parents district-wide to address any concerns people may have about why families were not notified about the threat on the day it was made. According to Pratt, the threat was made last Tuesday evening, the caller was identified immediately and the person known to be in police custody. As a result, the district determined there was no immediate threat to students or staff.

Pratt’s full email is below.

Dear Parents and Staff,

This e-mail is to bring clarity to a situation that occurred Wednesday, August 30th, 2017 and dispel any rumors that might be moving through the community.

While we did receive a threatening message directed towards one of our high school assistant principals, it was never identified as a credible threat to our school, staff, or students. The individual in question, who placed a call to the school on Tuesday evening, was identified immediately and was recognized as being in police custody after the call was made due to a non-related issue. Based on what we knew about the person in question, the timing of the call and incarceration, and the detailed work of law enforcement, we knew students and staff were safe. Our administrative team and law enforcement worked together and at no time felt there was a threat to any student, staff member, or to our building in general.

Please know that we take the safety and security of everyone in our buildings seriously. If there was the slightest thought that there was any credibility to a threat or threatening act, we would work directly with law enforcement, take the necessary actions as directed, and communicate with our parents and staff.

Thank you to our local law enforcement for their quick action in this matter.

Greg Pratt,
Superintendent
