Lowell Area Schools Names New Red Arrow Varsity Football Coach

We received the following press release from the Lowell High School Athletic Department.

Jacob Henige has been named the varsity head coach of the Lowell Red Arrow football team. Coach Henige has been a member of the Red Arrow football coaching staff since 2009 and served as associate head football coach under Hall of Fame Coach Noel Dean for the 2016 and 2017 seasons when the team continued its run of playoff qualifying (seasons) and had a combined record of 18-5. Coach Henige returned to his alma mater, Grand Valley State University, during the 2018 season to explore collegiate football coaching and found that his heart belonged in Lowell coaching boys at Red Arrow Stadium.

“Coach Henige was a member of the coaching staff for many years and served in a variety of roles learning the aspects of coaching high school football for the Lowell Red Arrows. He understands that coaching football at Lowell is not the same as coaching football at most other schools – the expectations, the traditions and the community all make Lowell Football special,” says athletic director, Dee Crowley.

Superintendent Greg Pratt commented, “Coach Henige, who has coached and taught in Lowell for the past several years, is a dedicated individual who won’t be out-worked. Knowing that our program is in good hands, I look forward to seeing Coach Henige work with our student-athletes in the fall.”

Coach Henige was a four-year letter winner at Grand Valley State University and was a member of three NCAA Division II National Championship teams in 2003, 2005, and 2006. He was a two-time All-GLIAC selection as an offensive lineman in 2006 and 2007. Coach Henige started his coaching career with the Red Arrows in 2009 as a varsity offensive line coach. A teaching position led him to Arizona for a few years before returning to Lowell in 2012 and his current position as middle school physical education teacher. Coach Henige served in numerous coaching responsibilities with Lowell football, including JV head coach/offensive coordinator and varsity assistant football coach before assuming associate varsity head coach responsibilities with Coach Noel Dean. Coach Henige also serves as an assistant varsity and middle school track coach and is pursuing his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership at GVSU.

“Lowell is a special community, filled with outstanding people that care deeply about the success of all students. As a football program, we are going to be relentless in our daily pursuit of upholding high standards and expectations,” said Coach Henige.

Coach Henige and his wife teach and live with their four young children in the Lowell community.
