The Lowell Showboat Sizzlin’ Summer Concerts can sometimes be, well, sizzling. On those hot nights, younger concertgoers might need a break — not just from the heat but also from the hustle and bustle of the crowd. Those seeking a reprieve can head to the Youth Art Zone, located in the community room of the Englehardt Library and hosted by Lowell Arts.
“Last year, they did tables outside, and it was so hot,” says Camille Knouff, an art facilitator with Lowell Arts.
This year, the library has graciously offered use of its space, and families will find the crafting area in the community room which is just inside the entrance doors.
“It’s really nice,” Knouff says. “You can see the concert, and you can hear the concert.”
Each week, the Youth Art Zones offers at least one craft and coloring sheet that can be completed free of charge, and so far, about 25 kids plus their parents have taken advantage of the opportunity each week.
Youth Art Zone: Free Fun During Free Concerts
All kids are invited to participate in the Youth Art Zone. However, those who are younger than age 8 need to be accompanied by a parent or someone age 14 or older. Children 8 and older can participate unattended but should know a phone number where a parent or caregiver can be contacted if needed.
Knouff is organizing this year’s activities and previous crafts have included maracas and wrist parrots.
“The kids have been fantastic so far,” she says.

In addition to a table full of crafting supplies, Knouff has several headphones on hand for kids who may be feeling overwhelmed and need to bring down the volume around them.
The Youth Art Zone is free and will run each week during the Lowell Showboat Sizzlin’ Summer Concert Series. These concerts are also free and run most Thursdays during the summer at 7pm on the Riverwalk. Note that while there is a bonus Friday concert on July 11 for the Riverwalk Festival, there will be no Youth Art Zone during that event.
