Make Plans to Visit the Lowell Harvest Celebration Tomorrow

Every year, the community of Lowell spends a day celebrating the season of fall. The 2017 Lowell Harvest Celebration will take place tomorrow, Saturday, October 14.

Organized by the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce and funded by the Downtown Development Authority, there’s enough going on to fill your whole day. Here’s a breakdown of the event.

Lowell Harvest Celebration Food

Start your day at the Wittenbach Wege Center with a free pancake breakfast. Served from 8-11am, your meal comes compliments of the center and the Lowell FFA. You can follow-up breakfast with apple tastings from 9am-12pm, and pond and facility tours will take place at the same time. If you’re not familiar with the Wittenbach Wege Center, it’s on Vergennes St., across from Lowell High School.

For lunch, head downtown for the Larkin’s Chili Madness Chili Cook-Off. Contestants will start making their chili creations at 11am, and the tasting begins at 3pm. Broadway St., by Larkin’s and the Post Office, will be closed for the event. That’s where you want to head to get your sample of the best chili Lowell has to offer. All proceeds from the event will support the Rebuild the Showboat effort.

If chili isn’t your thing, walk just a few feet down the road to where Lowell Light & Power will be passing out free hot dogs, chips and beverages from 11am-2pm.

Lowell Harvest Celebration Activities

Where to begin? If you’re an early bird, you could walk away with a new bird at the MBGBA Bird and Small Animal Swap. The event will be held at the fairgrounds from 6am-12pm, and vendors will be on hand to swap or sell all sorts of birds, small animals, supplies and more. For best selection, head to the fairgrounds early.

Early risers can also take part in the 13th Annual Harvest Hustle 5K Run/Walk. Race day registration starts at 8am on the Avery St. side of City Hall. Then everyone kicks up their heels at 8:30am on a route that will take you through town. Course is stroller friendly!

Back at the fairgrounds, from 11am-4pm, is the Autumn Marketplace. You’ll find homemade foods, crafts, antiques and more. It’s your chance to find some hidden treasures and maybe even get a head start on your holiday shopping list.

While you’re in the area, stop by the Lowell Area Fire Department Open House. It runs from 11am-1pm and will feature fire truck rides, snacks and giveaways.

Remember those hot dogs and chips at Lowell Light & Power? Those aren’t the only things the utility is giving away tomorrow. There will be an open house and bucket rides from 11am-2pm as well.

Before you leave, head back to the fairgrounds to make your very own scarecrow. The Scarecrow Building Hoedown will run from 12pm until supplies run out. For $5, you get everything need, including clothes and straw, to make a guardian for your garden or front porch. This family fun event is presented by FROM and the Lowell High School Interact Club.

Lowell Harvest Celebration Entertainment

The only thing missing from the day now is a little music to add to the ambiance. Oh wait. It’s not missing. In fact, live music will be available at two locations during the Harvest Celebration.

First, those of you at the fairgrounds between 11am-4pm can enjoy what is billed as an “eclectic mix of entertainment” in the Reath Barn.

Downtown, you can hear live music at the Larkin’s Chili Madness Chili Cook-Off from 1pm-5pm.

When the music dies down at Larkin’s, that marks the official close of the 2017 Lowell Harvest Celebration. However, if that didn’t provide your fill of fall fun, don’t forget there is more to do in the coming weeks at Heidi’s Farmstand, Olin Farm and the Red Barn Market
