Lowell High School Girls Basketball Begins

The Lowell High School Girls Basketball season began last week.  Coming off back-to-back league championships, this year’s team could face high expectations.  Varsity coach Heath Kent says his team has embraced having a bullseye on their back.

Kent begins his 12th year as a head coach, his third in Lowell.  Approximately 30 students participate in the program at the high school level on Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshmen teams.  While the Varsity team has started off with a 0-2 start, it’s where they end up the beginning of March when the season ends that counts.  Those interested in following any of the teams can get updates on Facebook, Twitter (@RedArrowHoops) and at Red Arrow Athletics.

Kent and the team of coaches across the high school level are eager for the new season to continue.  The teams are ready for what each game holds. Senior Regan Coxon was recently named Meijer athlete of the week.  Kent feels that participating in high school sports teaches life skills not learned within classroom walls. “Kids learn time-management skills, how to be accountable to a team, how to work with others to achieve a goal, and most importantly I think they learn to deal with adversity and how to be resilient when things are tough.” he says.

The girls basketball team is ending a fundraising movement in one day.  Money raised will go into the program for the purchase of jerseys, equipment, and summer camp fees.  Coaches and players hope the community will come out to support them and other Lowell High School sports.  Everyone involved works hard to represent their school and community. The more visual support at games the better!  The next game is away at East Grand Rapids at 7pm. Cheer on the team at home next week on Thursday, December 20 at 7pm.  Look for us to profile some of the Girls Varsity Basketball team players in the new year.
