LowellArts Announces the 2022 Theatre Season

LOWELL, MI, January 21, 2022 | Now in its 24th season of productions, LowellArts is excited to announce its 2022 theatre season. Although the pandemic created many challenges for live performances in 2020 & 2021, LowellArts is committed to its mission of connecting artists and audiences through visual and performing arts–and is approaching this upcoming theatre season with optimism and renewed energy.

Heading up the theatre program at LowellArts is newly hired staff, Laurel Jordan, who has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre from Adrian College. The 2022 theatre season will consist of a youth production performed at the Lowell Performing Arts Center and three productions held at the LowellArts Gallery. The season schedule includes: youth theatre production, The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood by Mary Lynn Dobson April 15 & 16, The Cemetery Club by Ivan Menchell April 29 to May 8, Sylvia by A. R. Gurney July 29 to August 7, and a 10-minute play festival Playbytes by Playwrights October 21 to 30. More information can be found at lowellartsmi.org/theatre-season.

The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood by Mary Lynn Dobson | April 15 & 16 at Lowell Performing Arts Center, 11700 Vergennes, Lowell, MI 49331 | Synopsis: It sure is hard to be humble when you’re a swashbuckling, egocentric super-hero. But our gallant guy-in-green tries his best as he swaggers through a frantically funny, Monty Python-esque retelling of the classic.

The Cemetery Club by Ivan Menchell | April 29, 30, May 1 & May 6, 7, 8 | LowellArts Gallery, 223 W Main St, Lowell, MI 49331 | Synopsis: Three Jewish widows meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husbands’ graves. When Sam the butcher meets the widows while visiting his wife’s grave, Doris and Lucille squash the budding romance between Sam and Ida but are guilt-stricken when this breaks Ida’s heart.

Sylvia by A. R. Gurney | July 29, 30, 31 & Aug 5, 6, 7 | LowellArts Gallery, 223 W Main St, Lowell, MI 49331 | Synopsis: After moving to Manhattan with his wife, Kate, Greg brings home a dog he found in the park – or that has found him – bearing only the name “Sylvia” on her name tag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife as Sylvia becomes a rival for Greg’s affection.

Playbytes by Playwrights: Things That Go Bump in the Night, a 10-minute play festival | October 21, 22, 23 & 28, 29, 30 | LowellArts Gallery, 223 W Main St, Lowell, MI 49331 | Synopsis: Original 10-minute plays will be submitted, juried, and selected to be performed as a part of Playbytes by Playwrights at LowellArts. All 10-minute plays will be the playwrights take on the 2022 theme: things that go bump in the night.
