Luminaria Night Kicks Off Relay for Life Event

This Thursday from 7pm-9pm you are invited to Luminaria Night along the Riverwalk.  This serves as the kick off for the main event which will take place on June 24 from 11am-11pm.

Re-lei for Life
This year’s luau theme will be introduced Thursday evening with leis and a limbo competition.  It’s also a time for individuals or teams to register for the main event.  Information and fundraising supplies will be distributed.  Registration for a volleyball tournament and luau dinner can also be done at the event.

Guests will also have the opportunity to decorate a luminaria bag to honor a friend or loved one impacted by cancer.  The bags will be lit once the sun sets during the actual relay event.  This is an emotional part of the relay event as those have been on a cancer journey are honored.  You’re also invited to participate in a limbo contest.

The Main Event
On June 24 from 11am-11pm teams and individuals will take to a course along the Riverwalk.  The idea is for teams to always have someone on the course representing the idea that cancer never sleeps.  Throughout the 12 hour event various activities and entertainment will keep participants and observers busy.

The course for the relay goes along the Riverwalk, around the block and back to the Flat River near the library.  There are currently 11 teams consisting of a total of 64 people registered for the event.  Fundraising to date is at a total of $17,320.25. Business supporters so far are Presenting Sponsors the A1 Laser Christmas Tree Sale Committee, Gold Sponsors Meijer, Bronze Sponsors Farm Bureau Insurance and the following Signature Sponsors: Effex Management Solutions, Bricks Alto Marathon, Discovery Toys, New Orleans Crispy Chicken and Grand River Veterinary Hospital.  There is still time to register or become a sponsor!

The luau dinner will be prepared by PorkFat Slims Backyard BBQ.  Off The Radar will provide musical entertainment throughout the day.  Other activities include lip sync and air guitar contests, karaoke, a “Zumbathon”, and silent auction.  All proceeds raised from team pledges and the silent auction will go to the American Cancer Society.

What, Where, When, Why
Cancer has touched the lives of just about everyone in one way or another.  You may have cancer or be a survivor.  You may have a friend or family member who is having or has had a cancer journey.  You may be a caregiver to someone with cancer.  Cancer doesn’t discriminate.  The American Cancer Society continues their efforts to find a cure for cancer.  Relays across the nation help raise funds for their cause.
