Maple Ridge Manor Plans June 2020 Opening

Area residents will have a new choice for assisted living come next summer. Maple Ridge Manor is currently under construction at the corner of Foreman Street and Alden Nash Avenue SE in Lowell Charter Township. Its owners expect to open the doors in June 2020 and say the new facility will help meet the growing need for senior living options in the area.

The locally-owned facility promises to offer amenities not found at other assisted living facilities nearby as well as a high level of staffing. “Our parents have taken care of us all these years,” says Howard Barriger, one of the manor’s owners. When it comes time for parents to need care themselves, Maple Ridge Manor will provide a safe and secure place that feels like home, Barriger says.

Meeting Growing Demand in Lowell

Barriger, who is a Lowell resident, is no stranger to the world of assisted living. Maple Ridge Manor will be the 14th facility in which he has served as either a consultant or an owner. He says a feasibility study found that Lowell has a need for an additional 119 beds in assisted living and 32 beds in memory care.

Assisted living provides housing in which residents can be largely independent. Staff may assist with some needs, such as bathing and monitoring medication, but residents have their own private space and freedom to come and go as they please. Memory care facilities are for those who need a higher level of care because of Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or similar conditions.

According to 2017 Census Bureau data, nearly 19% of residents in the 49331 zip code are age 62 or older. As the population ages, Barriger says his feasibility study shows the need for senior living beds will increase 25% in the coming years.

Maple Ridge Manor won’t completely meet Lowell’s need for assisted living and memory care, but it will provide a total of 54 new beds in the area. Of those, 40 beds will be in assisted living, and 14 beds will be in a separate memory care unit.

Rural Setting Offers Unique Living Experience

The setting of Maple Ridge Manor is part of what makes it unique, Barriger says. “One thing I like about the site is that it is rural,” he notes. The owners have big plans to take advantage of the property’s country setting by installing walkways, a fire pit and a waterfall or fountain behind the building for residents to enjoy.

“We have a lot of extras here you won’t find anywhere else,” explains Rachel Bartlett, who will serve as the facility’s general manager. Among other features, the building will have an on-site beauty shop and community rooms. An activities director will plan events and outings for those who want to participate. Pets are also welcome although there may be additional charge for them.

Assisted living residents can choice from studio, one-bedroom and deluxe one-bedroom living options. Residents in memory care will have studio rooms. All residents have private bathrooms and showers, and all rooms are equipped with a nurse call system. A bed, dresser, chair and TV will also be provided for each room although residents are able to furnish their space however they want. All meals are provided by manor staff.

Maple Ridge Manor expects to have 30-35 employees when fully staffed, and Bartlett says staffing in the memory care unit will exceed state minimum requirements. The memory care unit will also have a keypad access system to ensure resident safety.

The facility is already taking names of those interested in reserving a room. More information, including floor plans and pricing, can be found on the Maple Ridge Manor website.
