The past will be brought to life, and the community is welcome to join in the fun when the Fallasburg Historical Society hosts the third annual Fallasburg Village Celebration this Saturday, July 27.
The historic village tucked away in Fallasburg Park will be the site of the celebration that will have, among many things, artisans, live bands, a classic car show, and a beer tent. Many of the artisans will do demonstrations of their crafts, and the village’s on-site museums will be open. There will also be a variety of food options available.
Families are welcome as there will be many activities for children including horse-drawn carriage and cart rides, pioneer and civil war reenactments, and Lowell’s own Santa Claus will be stopping by to celebrate.
Bruce Doll, vice president of the Fallasburg Historical Society, says the celebration upholds the society’s mission, which is “to preserve and promote the unique history of Fallasburg village by bringing its past to life for present and future generations.”
“History is important because, obviously, you realize now that when you look back at history, you can learn a lot from it. What not to do. What to do. I just feel it’s important,” Doll says.
The Fallasburg Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and Doll says the village is a “beautiful resource” but is “underutilized.” It contains the remaining parts of a nineteenth century farm village near the Fallasburg Bridge. In its heyday, the village included a sawmill, school, post office, and two general stores. Remnants of the old village are either reconstructed or preserved by the Society.
Many sponsors have contributed to the celebration, and Doll attributes this partly to the success of the first two years of the event. He says it was originally intended to be a block party for nearby residents and ended up being a much bigger event than what was initially planned.
“It built up much more than that because the first year we had a great celebration,” according to Doll. “The second year, it was even better, and this year is going to be phenomenal.”
The number of attendees from past years is estimated to be between 1,600 – 1,800, and Doll anticipates a larger crowd this year.
The celebration will begin at 11 am and end around 8 pm. There will be 12 music bands on two different stages, and artisans, demonstrations, and other activities will be scattered throughout the village.
Doll says the differences between this event and the Fallasburg Arts Festival held in September are “huge.”
“The Fallasburg Art Festival is a juried art show,” he says. “It’s awesome. We love it. Ours is much more than an art show.”
Doll says most of the artisans will be demonstrating their crafts including glass blowing, metal forging, broom making, and a World War II sock-making machine.
Santa Claus will meet with kids from 1-3 pm in the village school house for “Christmas in July.” Photography lights will be set up so parents can take their own photos of their children with Santa, if desired.
Doll says this event is unique and is meant to bring the community together to appreciate our shared heritage.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s going to be different from anything else in Lowell,” he says. “It’s a mix of old fashioned and new coming together, and it kind of goes with our motto: for this generation and the future.”
If you plan to attend, be aware that the Fallasburg Village is across the river from the main Fallasburg Park area. You can use the address 14029 Covered Bridge Rd NE to map the route from your home. There is no cost to attend, but parking is $5.
