Pink Arrow Pride Distributes $127,500 for Cancer Support Programs

Teresa Beachum and Ethel Stears (l) present a check from Pink Arrow Pride to Wendy Wigger and Lindsay Jousma (r) of Gilda's Club.

You did it Lowell. You helped raise $127,500 to support local families who are facing a cancer diagnosis or its aftermath.

The money came from t-shirt sales, business donations and direct contributions that were made as part of Pink Arrow XI. Now that the dust has settled from the annual event, the Pink Arrow Pride organization has written checks to divvy up the proceeds in the following way.

  • Gilda’s Club — $72,000
  • Lowell Community Wellness — $46,000
  • Student Scholarships — $9,500

The money given to Gilda’s Club helps support the operation of their local clubhouse and programs. The non-profit holds a weekly dinner and support sessions every Tuesday in the building it shares with Seniors Neighbors on Hudson Street. Its various groups and programs are designed to help those in the midst of a cancer diagnosis as well as those dealing with the grief of losing a loved one. There are also groups for teens, tweens and younger children.

“I can’t thank you enough,” said Wendy Wigger, president of Gilda’s Club. “I know a lot of sweat and tears went into this.” Wigger received the donation from Pink Arrow coordinators Teresa Beachum and Ethel Stears during the annual Gilda’s Club Christmas party.

Lowell Community Wellness received their checks earlier, with $46,000 earmarked to provide direct support to local families affected by cancer. The final $9,500 will be used to fund the Kathy Talus Memorial Scholarship and the Dr. Donald Gerard Scholarship which are available to Lowell High School students.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with cancer and you live within the Lowell Area School District, you can submit an application for the Pink Arrow Family Support Program to request assistance.
