Keeping Lowell Safe: Police Beat for November 2018

Compared to previous months, November was relatively quiet for the Lowell Police Department. Officers took 156 calls that included the following:

  • Medical assists – 9
  • Assists to other agencies – 17
  • Drunk driving – 2
  • Accidents – 10

Here are details on some of these cases:

Second Offense Drunk Driver

A vehicle was observed driving into a business parking lot after hours without its lights on. It then pulled out and headed eastbound. The vehicle was jerking back and forth in the lane. When pulled over, the driver said he had just left a local bar. His blood alcohol level was 0.12, and driving at a level at or above 0.08 is illegal. The driver was arrested for operating while impaired. It was his second offense.

Breaking and Entering in an Apartment

A local resident left for work at 4am and returned to his apartment at 8am. He noticed the window was open, and a drawer was open in a room. His wallet was in the drawer, and the $200 that had been in it was missing. Police lifted prints from the scene and sent them to the lab for processing.

Ebay Mail Fraud

Someone filed a complaint with the police about suspected mail fraud. The person ordered coins on eBay, but when the cushioned mailer arrived, it was empty. It was believed that the seller intentionally sent an empty package. Since the suspect is out of state, the buyer filed a claim with eBay for reimbursement.

Love Connection Leads to Stolen Car

A female invited a male to spend the night at her apartment. In the morning, the female discovered the male, as well as her car, was gone. The vehicle was later recovered in Grand Rapids. The victim only knew the man by his street name – Yung Drezzy – and has not cooperated in providing additional information for police to apprehend him.

Felony Drunk Driving

An officer was traveling west on Main Street and pulled over a vehicle for an equipment issue and an expired license plate. Upon approaching the driver, the officer smelled the odor of intoxicants. The man had a suspended driver’s license, and his blood alcohol level was 0.17. The driver was lodged at the county jail for driving with a suspended license and for driving under the influence. This is the driver’s third charge of operating while impaired. That elevates the crime to a felony that is punishable by 1-5 years in prison.

3 Counties, 8 Warrants

Police were called to a domestic dispute between a man and a woman. That dispute boiled down to “he said/she said,” and no charges were filed. However, it was discovered the man had eight outstanding warrants issued by Kent, Ionia and Montcalm Counties. He was arrested for those.

Fatal House Fire

In the most tragic call handled by police in November, an officer responded to the report of a house fire on Grand River Ave. Upon arriving, he found an elderly woman and a man outside the home. Flames were visible from the house.

Per the dispatch call, the officer knew a man was still believed to be in the home. The officer, along with a member of the fire department, located the man just inside a sliding glass door. They were able to pull the man from the house. He did not have a pulse, and they started CPR. However, he could not be revived by the officer, paramedics or the staff at the hospital where he was transported.

New Electronic Speed Signs Up

Lowell drivers will notice new electronic speed signs on Foreman Street and Bowes Road. When the numbers on these signs are flashing, it means you’re driving too fast.

  1. How about putting an electronic speed sign on N.Jefferson St.to slow down all the speeding trucks and Semi’s?
