LowellArts! will host the benefit CD Release Party for the Bruce Matthew Band’s (BMB) latest CD,  on January 6, 2018  from 7 to 9 p.m.. Entitled”Roll Your Windows Down,” Matthews’ second CD features 8 songs, including 6 originals and two traditionals. “Our music has been described as ‘front porch music’ in the Americana tradition,” says Matthews. “Somebody called it ‘roll your windows down’ music, and the idea kind of stuck.”

On “Roll Your Windows Down,” in addition to the title song there are tributes to Matthews’ late brother-in-law as well as “Kyara’s Song” for an 8 year-old friend of the family, killed in an accident. Another song, “Cherries at Gettysburg” is a ballad recounting the experience of the 1st Minnesota Volunteers during the Battle of Gettysburg, when the regiment lost 80% of its men in 5 minutes while holding the Union line. Two traditionals, “Shenandoah” and “Run On” get powerful new arrangements from the BMB. Rounding out the list are “Your Best Ain’t Good Enough” and “Gotta Go,” sharing a conviction that you’re not saddled with the past, and always moving forward.

Matthews, who lives in Lowell, released his first CD, “So Far…” in 2014, also featuring his original music. “The Bruce Matthews Band (BMB) is probably more properly called the BMP (Bruce Matthews Project),” according to Matthews, ” because we feature so many talented musicians and friends in our music. It’s a real labor of love for us all.”

The BMB CD Release Party will benefit  LowellArts and its mission of “connecting regional artists and audiences through the visual and performing arts.” Many of the BMB’s musicians will gather to celebrate the release of the new album and to play songs from it as well as Matthews’ first CD, “So Far.” For more information contact Matthews, or LowellArts at  (616) 897-8545.
