Press Release: FROM Annual Food Fight Starts This Week

We received the following information from Flat River Outreach Ministries about Food Fight, which began yesterday and runs until June 1.

GENEROUS MATCHING SPONSORS PLEDGE

OVER $20,000 TO FOOD FIGHT TO HELP NEIGHBORS IN NEED

Food Fight 2019 kicked off April 22 with support from nine local businesses (listed below) who have pledged over $24,000 in matching funds to help encourage other businesses and individuals to donate to support FROM (Flat River Outreach Ministries) programs. The $24,700 match means any new or increased donation made to Food Fight will be doubled and the impact on our community will be even larger.

Now in its eleventh year, Food Fight began as friendly competition to help fill the food pantry shelves, but has become so much more. It is now the biggest fundraising event for the non-profit and allows the organization to offer programs like employment assistance, energy bill payment, food pantry, Lunch Buddies and also connections to other services and programs available throughout West Michigan.

All funds raised by FROM stay in the community to support those living in the Lowell Area School District. FROM, a Christian non-profit agency that was started over twenty years ago by 13 area churches, relies on over 300 volunteers and a staff of nine to serve neighbors in need.

“We are so excited about the $24,000 match this year and incredibly thankful for our Matching Sponsors who are a key part in the success of this fundraiser,” says Dawn Broene, Executive Director.  “Our goal is to raise $125,000 in food and funds this year we couldn’t do that without our matching sponsors, local business sponsors and individual donors. Each year we are blessed by the generosity of our community; people coming together to help support their neighbors in need.”

How does the Food Fight work? Each dollar raised and food item donated is translated into points on the scoreboard. Each person who donates designates which team (North or South with Main Street as the dividing line) gets their points. North and South are each tied with 5 wins so this is the year for one side to pull ahead and get bragging rights for an entire year.

To Join the Fight individuals can donate money online (www.fromlowell.org) , in person, or by mail (FROM, 11535 Fulton Street East). They can also donate food at FROM (check out the list of most needed pantry items here http://fromlowell.org/foodpantry). Springrove Variety and Treasures Thrift Shop will also be participating in the “Show you Care, Buy a Square” campaign, where shoppers can purchase red or white squares for $1 to show support for the North or South team.

New this year, FROM is also hosting Finding FROM events to educate the community on who FROM is and what the organization is doing to help our neighbors in need. A behind the scenes building tour, light refreshments and future plans for the organization will also be included. Events are free and open to the public with no RSVP required. They will take place May 2, 16 & 30 at 6 pm and May 9,23 & 30 at noon at FROM.

Food Fight runs from April 22- June 1st when the points will be tallied and the winner will be announced. So, join the fight today and donate to help your neighbors in need!

Generous Matching Sponsors include:  All Weather Seal, Amway, Betten Baker, Enwork, Litehouse, King Milling, River Valley Credit Union, Magna and Vergennes Broad
