FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RADIO AND COMMUNITIES TEAM IN “TREASURES FOR TROOPS” 2019

The week of November 11th through 15th is officially be the week of Treasures for Troops coordinated by WION radio, but individuals and communities are already involved!

Treasures for Troops is now in it’s 6th year with WION radio, Ionia  at the helm and it’s many partners, including sister station WGLM, Greenville/Lakeview,  the Young Automotive Group, Ionia, Lowell area Schools’ radio station WRWW, and broadcast location partners including the Muir Village Market, Ionia Moose Lodge, Lake Odessa’s Page Memorial Building (Village Hall) Lowell area Chamber of Commerce, and the Young GM showroom.

In 2018, 260 boxes were sent out to troops by Blue Star Mothers Chapter 188 of Ionia, Kent, and Montcalm Counties after hours of sorting and boxing-a new record for this annual event. This year, while no specific goals are being set, all involved simply want to collect and send as many items and boxes as possible.

New this year is the involvement of not only Lowell High School, but Lowell Middle School as the students spread the word about this project and contribute what they can. Last year, Lowell’s students contributed more than a full SUV’s worth of donations during WION’s broadcast from the Lowell Chamber.  Also new this year is the generous use of a room at the Ionia Moose Lodge  sorting, boxing, and preparing donations for shipment.  The Moose membership has also been actively spreading the word about this drive.

Organizers are also pleased to thank Saranac Community Schools for their students’ contribution of cards and notes for the troops, Ionia Schools for their spreading the word and contributing, and various businesses which are drop-off points for donations.  At this time, drop-off points aside from broadcast locations include YCD electronics in Lowell, The Auction Addict’s Attic in Ionia, Ionia City Hall, DDA, and area Chamber offices, Sponsor offices, Lowell Middle and High School offices or WRWW studios at Lowell High, WGLM studios in Greenville, and at our sponsor’s showrooms at either of the Young Automotive dealerships in Ionia.

Broadcast locations and times, and a list of needs for our deployed soldiers is posted in the center square of www.i1430.com and there is a Facebook “Events page” at facebook.com/i1430, mirrored in content on WION’s website in a link just below the needs list.

You can help with your donation of items, sorting/boxing, or writing notes and cards for our soldiers who are far from home as we draw 2019 near it’s close.

  1. I would like to recommend the USS Lincoln. They were supposed to come home before Halloween, but because of another ship’s problems, they are still out at sea and will still be out there probably till Spring!

    • If you know of specific soldiers on the USS Lincoln whom you’d like to get a box from this drive, look up Blue Star Mothers #188 on Facebook, or send the physical mailing address of those soldiers (full name, address, etc.) to “[email protected]” and they’ll be included in the mailing!

      • I’m sorry, I don’t have an address for a specific soldier on the Lincoln. My son is on the USS FOREST SHERMAN nearby, but we’re already sending him lots of stuff.
