Run for Your Life 5k and Family Walk Scheduled for June 4

The Alpha Care Center has been hosting a family walk since 2004, before the center’s physical location was even established. Then, about 10 years later, the organization added a 5k run for those who wanted to pick up the pace.

This year, the annual Run for Your Life 5k and Family Walk will take place on June 4, 2022.

Runners will start from Impact Church on Fulton Street at 9:30am, and the race route will take participants through the Grand River Riverfront Park, over the park bridge and back. All participants will receive a t-shirt and ice cream voucher for Corner Stop Ice Cream. Plus, there will be kids’ activities and a hot dog lunch provided.

Annual Event Funds Center Needs

The run/walk is one of the Alpha Care Center’s annual fundraisers that helps pay for general operating expenses.

“The year of COVID, we had a virtual event,” notes executive director Christa Wetzel. Despite the unusual format, that ended up being a record-breaking year with donations topping $17,000. “It was so cool to see,” Wetzel says.

Last year, the event raised $15,000 with 82 people in attendance. Wetzel said the center has a similar goal this year. The registration fee is $25 per person with a cap of $60 per family. Participants are also invited to gather sponsorships from others as well.

All money raised will go fund activities at the Lowell location at 519 E. Main Street. Although Alpha Care Center has a Lake Odessa location as well, that center will have its own run/walk event on August 13.

Services Offered by Alpha Care Center

Alpha Care Center offers three types of services to Lowell-area residents:

  • Medical: Pregnancy tests, ultrasounds and STD/STI testing
  • Educational: GED and ESL classes
  • Material support: Diapers, formula, clothes and other items families might need

In 2021, the Lowell non-profit served 453 clients, and services are free to those who are pregnant or who have children younger than age 5.

“We appreciate all our many volunteers,” Wetzel says. That includes those who help out at the center as well as the people who make events such as the Run for Your Life 5k and Family Walk possible.

“We’re going to have an awesome, family-fun time,” Wetzel says. “Come and support the community and life.”
