Scenes from Lowell: 2018 Expo Edition

The 22nd Lowell Expo is in the books.  We at Lowell’s First Look enjoyed meeting people in the community, seeing familiar faces, and giving people the opportunity to put our faces with our writing.  We did a few live Facebook videos in case you missed them.  Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 23 2019 – the date of next year’s Expo!

Congratulations to our raffle winners.  Becky Bowman won $10 in Lowell Bucks.  Becky, check your email for those!  And Red Barn Consignment & Antiques won one free month of advertising with us!

Festivities started at 9 with Opening Ceremonies.  Person of the Year, Betsy Davidson represented Lowell by carrying the torch in prior to Gwendolyn Hackett signing the National Anthem.

Flat River Outreach Ministries provided information on how they help members of the community through a variety of services.

The Kent District Library (KDL) is another community organization which provides numerous opportunities for all ages.  Programs for kids of all ages as well as adults take place at both the Lowell and Alto branches.  Books, media, games, and more can all be checked out, free of charge, at KDL branches.

Tai Kwon Do is offered through the local YMCA. Students showed off board breaking.   We also were live on Facebook during part of their demonstration.

Both the Fallasburg Historical Society and the Lowell Area Historic Museum had booths.  Both organizations help ensure the community’s past is not forgotten.  They also make sure current historic events and articles are recorded for future generations.

Fairly new in town, J-Dubbs was handing out samples.  We thank them for being one of our March advertisers.  They also described some of the subs they brought in a video.  Did you get a sample?

The Hallway of Fun is always a hit with the kids.  Ninjas on the Move, archery, a climbing wall, and the unveiling of Kids Games bowling were some of the hands on activities.  Did you see the video we posted during Expo about this fun location?

High School students provided some entertainment for Expo visitors and vendors.  We also brought one of the songs they played live on Facebook.  Middle School musicians also spent some time entertaining, but regrettably we did not take any photos or video.

Vendors weren’t just sitting at their assigned location greeting people.  A Minion from Advanced Eyecare Professionals checked out what live animals Boulder Ridge Animal Park brought to the Expo.

Local educators were also present.  Lowell Area School, Lowell Schools Transportation Department, Curiosity Corner Preschool, and the Michigan Education Corps were all on hand to greet the community.  Kathy Burch of Curiosity Corner Preschool even took a little time to record a video for us.   Michigan Education Corps provides tutors in elementary schools to help students K-3 achieve reading goals appropriate to their grade level.

The Easy Idle Sting Band had listeners tapping their toes with their tunes.  We recorded one of their numbers and have it available for viewing on our YouTube page.

Cheater B’s Band also had people moving to their tunes.  We’ve also uploaded one of their songs at our YouTube page.

The final musical act of the afternoon was Deborah Kay of Avery Street Music.  And you can again check out one of the songs she performed on our YouTube page.

Local Boy Scouts were on hand to take lunch orders from vendors and deliver them, making it easy for those at a booth to get a bite to eat.  Their service was definitely appreciated.

It wouldn’t be a community event without an appearance by Pickles.  She even had her nails done for the occasion.

LowellArts and the Lowell Rotary Club are staples in the community.  Visitors were able to learn about what each organization has to offer.

The final entertainment of the Olympic themes Expo were games.  Prizes were handed out after contestants competed in various events.  Above are head to head battles for flower planting and creating an up-do.   We took video of the flower planting event as well as the up-do competition.  And we were live on Facebook for the other games.  Cliff Yankovich of Chimera Design introduced the games along with Al Eckman of WRWW, the high school’s radio station.

Maryalene (l) and Tina (r) are ready to tell others about Lowell’s First Look.

We thank those who stopped by to see us at the Lowell Expo.  We look forward to returning next year.  We had a tip jar for those who were interested in giving us story ideas.  Suggestions can still be emailed to [email protected] at any time.  Use the same email to let us know if you’d like to be signed up for our email updates.
