Scenes from Lowell: 2022 Riverwalk Festival Edition

With nearly perfect weather and an overwhelming turnout, the 2022 Riverwalk Festival was, by all measures, a success. After being disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, most popular events were back this year with a few twists to the line-up of activities.

Here’s a look back on the three-day event which took place on July 7-9, 2022. Special thanks to Bruce Doll of Images of Vision for sharing some of his photos from the weekend.

The Riverwalk Festival kicked off on Thursday night with a performance by The Insiders: Tom Petty Tribute Band.

The crowd that turned out for the performance is possibly the biggest one ever for the summer concert series.

Look at how far back that crowd goes!

On Friday night, there was more music — this time compliments of the Sea Cruisers.

Vendor tents and Flea on the Flat River also opened on Friday night.

For many people, Saturday is the main event for the Riverwalk Festival, and activities kicked off early with the Run the Riverwalk 5K starting at 7am.

At 10am, there was a race of a different kind as the kayak, canoe and SUP race returned this year with participants of all ages. After the race, sponsor Bill and Paul’s Sporthaus stayed through the afternoon for Kayak Fun. It was a chance for anyone to try out a kayak and take a trip along the Flat River.

Vendor tents were open throughout the day too, and these included non-profits such as LowellArts

…and Alpha Care Center.

Some booths were for organizations that are well-known to local residents, such as Mackenzie’s Animal Sancturay.

Others were for new additions to the community, such as LoMi Studios…

…and Bushido-Ryu Karate.

Farther down the Riverwalk, the Flea on the Flat River was taking place with local stores and individual vendors selling a variety of goods.

Batman made an appearance in the Kidz Zone…

…but he wasn’t the only superhero there.

Kaycee the Cow was another attraction in the Kidz Zone which had a variety of activities for the younger set.

If all that walking made you hungry, there were food trucks “Chillin’ and Grillin’ on Avery.”

You could also cool off by touring the air-conditioned Showboat and check out a great view of all the activity along the Riverwalk.

The turnout for this year’s Cruise-In was phenomenal. While past years had cars lining a section of Avery to Washington, the entries this year went to Jefferson and filled neighboring park lots as well.

At 1:45pm, the classic cars moved out during the Cruise-In Rumble.

Main Street was closed so cars could fill both lanes as they headed to Hudson Street, and a good-sized crowd lined the road to watch.

The Friends of the Library held a book sale as well, and behind the library building was a tent where people could try their luck at Bingo thanks to the Lowell Moose.

Other activities included a Ducky Derby, the State Farm $1500 Duck Raffle and the Laurels of Kent Fireworks, which wrapped up the festival in the event.

It was smiles all around for those who participated in the 2022 Riverwalk Festival. Thank you to the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce for another great year of fun!
