Athletics are an important part of the school experience for many students. And while there is often a lot of attention paid to high school sports, Lowell Middle School students are excelling as well.
Track and tennis are two popular spring sports, and here are some scenes from this year’s season. Our thanks to Amanda Schrauben for sharing these photos with us.
Track can often feel like a solo sport since students are out there running all alone.
But really, it’s a team sport.
Not only are there relay races where athletes must work together…
…but teammates are also standing on the sidelines cheering their classmates on.
The nice thing about track and field is that there are events for everyone — sprints, long distance, hurdles and relay races.
Plus, there are four field events to choose from. These include the high jump, above…
…and here’s the pole vault.
Students may find they have a lot of downtime between events, but that doesn’t seem to dampen their fun.
Tennis is another sport that attracts many middle schoolers.
At this age, students play doubles.
And there are no officials. Players are responsible for keeping their own score and calling when the ball goes out.
The coaches mill around to keep an eye on everyone and help as needed, but it’s really all up to you and your partner out there.
In both track and tennis, it’s nice to win, but we think a lot of Lowell Middle School students would agree that these spring sports are more about having fun than breaking records.
