Scenes from Lowell: Rotarians Work on Fall Clean Up Projects

The Lowell Rotary Club has participated in the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) Adopt-a-Highway program since 2019. The group takes care of M-21 from Standard Lumber to Cumberland. Each year three pick-ups are scheduled – April, July, and September. Groups sign up for three-year commitments. This was the third year the group has cleaned up this stretch of road but they’re looking forward to the next three years as well.

Karen Noreen has taken on the lead role for the group’s clean-up project with MDOT. She has been a Rotarian since 2010 and is the third generation in her family to be a member of the group. “The clean up is a great way for our club to benefit the community and have visibility as well,” she says. “Who doesn’t watch the Adopt-a-Highway signs as they fly by!”

During its regularly scheduled Wednesday at noon meeting last week, the group met for a quick lunch, instructions and then headed out to clean up along M-21.

MDOT provides vests and bags. Rotarian Mark Mundt also made fancy poker sticks to aid those cleaning up. Typically groups of 10-20 members help to pick up trash along the road.

In addition to their MDOT clean-up project, Rotarian John Sterly coordinated a fall clean-up at the Rotary Pavillion located by Cherry Creek Elementary School.
