It’s spring, and that means it’s time to play ball. However, Michigan weather doesn’t always cooperate with spring training for area softball and baseball teams and many head south to prepare for their seasons.

That was the case for the Lowell Red Arrows which sent 19 girls from the JV and varsity softball teams to Gulf Shores, Alabama during spring break. They were there to practice their swing and their fielding, but we found out they took some time to lend a helping a hand too.

The girls started one day with an early morning practice and then headed off to help Family Promise of Baldwin County, a community organization that works with homeless families who have children.

There, they helped clean up at the Impact Day Center.

There was work to do inside and outside.

And it was an all-hands-on-deck effort with coaches, parents and siblings helping out too.

Assistant coach Heather Eveland said it best: “(We) couldn’t be prouder of their hard work on and off the field.”

Speaking of on the field, the Lowell softball team started its season on a high note with wins over Ionia and Wyoming.

Way to go girls!
