Scenes from Lowell: Start of Summer Edition

School has been out for a few weeks, but the season of summer officially began on Thursday. We were certainly feeling it Sunday and Monday when words like tropical, oppressive and brutal seemed to have best described the temperature. Fortunately, it has cooled off, but the summer fun in Lowell is just heating up.

Here’s a look some of the sights from around town during the past week.

Saint Patrick’s Festival is running this weekend, but the parish had a different sort of celebration last Sunday. Fr. Mark Peacock, the church’s pastor for the past nine years, has received a new assignment that will take him to the Parish of Holy Spirit in Grand Rapids. The new assignment will start in July, and St. Patrick Parish held a farewell potluck for Fr. Mark this past Sunday. However, before the meal, the congregation gathered to bless the renovated entrance and new plaza space in front of the church building.

St. Patrick Parish isn’t the only place to see construction this summer. Crews have been hard at work making improvements to the grounds at Lowell High School.

Parents looking for ways to keep the younger set off screens this summer have had all sorts of options. Sports camps, like this tennis camp, are in full swing.

Plus, the Lowell and Alto branches of the Kent District Library have a full schedule of family-friendly activities planned. The Bubble Wonders show presented at the Englehardt branch in Lowell this past week drew a crowd and was a big hit.

You may have noticed all the ducks popping up all along Main Street. That can only mean one thing: Riverwalk Festival is around the corner! The annual event will take place July 12-14 this year and include all your old favorites, such as the Kidz Zone, pontoon rides, live music, artisan vendors and fireworks. There will also be a new twist on the parade that will have you “Dancin’ in the Streets.”

People who missed the opening weekend of theĀ West Michigan premiere of Our Time, a new play by award-winning writer Ken Levine, had their chance to see it on Friday and Saturday. Shown above is Sam VanderVeen, playing the role of Bobby.

The week wrapped up with a special day for one local business. Sweet Seasons celebrated its one year anniversary, and a steady stream of customers stopped by for coffee and treats as well as to share their congratulations.

We hope your summer got off to a great start, Lowell. Here’s to a season full of pleasant weather, lazy days and happy memories!
