Lowell is in the midst of a significant winter storm which started Monday, blanketed the area with snow and brought frigid air the likes of which we haven’t seen in 23 years. As of this writing, the temperature is reported to be -3 degrees with a wind chill of -19, and the National Weather Service reports 7.5 inches of snow have fallen.
Area students are on their third day off from school, and it’s possible they may see more snow days before the week is out. A winter storm warning is in effect until 1pm Thursday, and cold temperatures are making it difficult to clear the roads of ice.
Here’s what the scene looked like in downtown Lowell this morning.
City workers are taking advantage of a break in the weather to dig out and remove snow from city parking lots.
The Flat River is behind there somewhere.
After a few days of hiding, the sun decided to make an appearance this morning.
It isn’t just area schools closing this week. The library, businesses and even mail delivery have been shut down as a result of the inclement weather.
With the exception of Christmas Day, you almost never see downtown Lowell this quiet on a weekday morning.
Standing on Foreman Street to take this photo on a normal Wednesday wouldn’t be possible with all the traffic heading to Lowell Middle School, Cherry Creek Elementary School and local manufacturers. However, today, the road was deserted.
Despite the frigid weather and icy roads, you have to admit Lowell is looking lovely this morning with its blanket of fresh snow.
