Scenes from Lowell: Teacher Appreciation Week

Last week a variety of days could have been celebrated. There was May fourth – May the Fourth Be With You – for Star Wars fans. Some even marked May fifth as Revenge of the Fifth. May seventh was National No Pants Day. If these funny and unique daily celebrations sound like fun, sign up for Lowell’s First Look’s Weekly Round Up newsletter, which is sent out every Sunday and offers a recap of the past week’s published articles as well as a look ahead at the week’s upcoming National Days.

However, the most important celebration last week was that of teachers throughout the Lowell Area Schools district. We reached out to each building to see how they were celebrating those who encourage and inspire the community’s youth throughout the school year. Below is a brief look into the fun had while thanking teachers for all that they do.

Typically buildings work with parents to help coordinate, decorate, and collect items needed throughout the week. As with most things this school year, teacher appreciation week also looked a little different without the ability to have parent volunteers decorate and set up treats each day. However, this did not stop Curiosity Corner Preschool, Murray Lake Elementary, or Cherry Creek Elementary from recognizing teachers and staff for their contributions.

Kathy Burch, Director of Curiosity Corner Preschool, was more than happy to show some love to those who teach the youngest students in the district. “I am not sure that everyone knows the extra mile these teachers have had to go in order to make the first preschool experiences great for them!” says Burch. She started off the year with a glow stick and a quote from Jadah Sellner – “It’s okay to be a glow stick, sometimes we have to break before we can shine.” Burch says she wanted her staff to know the school year would be one where they all break but learn to shine in the end.

Burch said she may have had more fun than her teachers celebrating and she feels it’s important to recognize them not only for one week in May but throughout the year. She tries to incorporate monthly reminders of how important the work they’re doing is and it’s not going unnoticed. “I am so thankful for the staff here at Curiosity Corner, and not a day goes by, where I do not see or hear amazing things happening in the classrooms, despite all that is going on in the world around us.” concludes Burch.

Meanwhile, Molly Burnett, Principal at Murray Lake Elementary School, was busy celebrating with her staff. “We Simply Cannot Mask Our Gratitude for You” was the focus of the week. Each day a new surprise was in store and included themes like “Thanks a Latte for All You Do”, “Nacho Average Teachers & Staff”, “Teachers & Staff Like You are so Sweet”, and “You Make Us ‘Pop’ with Appreciation”.

Burnett said, “I love spoiling them -they deserve it.” of her staff. She also sent out information to student families with suggestions for what students could do to help celebrate their teachers including drawing a picture, writing a note, and bringing in a supply for the classroom.

Finally, at Cherry Creek Elementary Principal Craig Veldman treated his teachers and staff to a Star Wars themed week saying “We had a great week celebrating our teachers at Cherry Creek!”
