Scenes from Lowell: Our Favorite Photos from 2017

We’re wrapping up our trip down memory lane with this round-up of our favorite photos from last year.

From Amanda: As part of Pink Arrow X, I had the opportunity to take photos of all the students and some staff from the district forming an X on the football field. It wasn’t from the sidelines, but from the air! This experience was also my first ride in a helicopter. I enjoyed seeing the unique perspective from the air.

From Maryalene: Speaking of Pink Arrow X, Dave Bray USA made a special appearance at the big game. Lowell’s First Look got the chance to sit down for an exclusive interview with Dave and his wife Becky. Our conversation with the down-to-earth couple ranged from light to weighty topics, and this previously unpublished photo is my favorite from the night.

From Amanda: This was an instance of being in the right place at the right time. The birth of Willow, the donkey, at Red Barn Market wasn’t on my list of things to photograph the day it happened. But I happened to be there and was able to Willow making her entrance into the world.

From Tina: Tina spent some time up on the 43 Degree Hops farm and took oodles of photos. Among her favorites was this one of the sunset on the Chinook.

From Maryalene: We didn’t take this photo, but it’s one of my favorites that appeared on Lowell’s First Look last year. Lowell Light & Power provided it from their appearance at the Lineworkers Rodeo in the spring. I love seeing our workers in action, and the contrast of the blue sky with the American flag makes this a fantastic shot.

From Amanda: This photo is an example of being able to experience something cool (er, hot) and interesting. The Lowell Area Fire Department was able to train during live burns on a home which was to be torn down. Watching a house burn isn’t something you get to (thankfully) see every day.

From Tina: Chair-a-Tee was a major fundraiser for Pink Arrow Pride this year, and there were so many great entries. Tina liked, in particular, the message of this chair.

From Maryalene: This is another photo for which we can’t take credit. Nicki Videto Photography has been kind enough to share her photos of various events such as graduation and football games. I particularly like this shot from her of our Red Arrow football team in action.

From Amanda: I love creative, witty humor. It was a fun surprise seeing members of City Council sport ugly Christmas sweaters – and a dress – during their last meeting of 2017. It’s nice to know those serving enjoy having some fun at their own expense.

From Tina: Flat River Grill was pairing up some brews and desserts earlier this year, and Tina took this pic of one tasty option.

From Amanda: I’m an attention to details person. I like looking closely at something, sometimes searching for details not seen at first glance. I like to learn about and pay attention to what I’m covering in an article, similar to my enjoyment looking up at the sky to see if I can catch a glimpse of a Bald Eagle, Osprey, Red-tailed Hawk or some other bird, large or small. Whenever I spot an unusual find in the sky, I wonder if anyone else is taking the time to look up and notice what’s flying above. I like looking at topics I’m researching to write about from different angles in hopes of providing readers with a thorough look at the topics I share. To me this photo represents my looking beyond the surface at unusual “colors.”

From Maryalene: I love this photo of Jan Thompson being awarded the Women of the Year Award from the Lowell Women’s Club because it sums up what makes our community so extraordinary. Yes, we have a quaint downtown and beautiful rivers, but the people are what make Lowell so very special. Jan is one of those gems that make our town shine.

From Amanda: I like this photo more for what it represents rather than what is in the picture. It was 2017 when Lowell’s First Look completed a full year of writing articles. We’ve been able to prove ourselves as a real news source, offering content on a range of topics. And we’ve been able to continue to do so thanks to the positive feedback and readership in the community as well as support from those we have covered throughout the year.
