If you’ve been anywhere within 10 feet of a child this week, you’ve likely heard the big news. School’s out for summer! Yes, Lowell High School seniors graduated last weekend, and Friday marked the last day of school for everyone else.
But let us tell you: our schools packed in so much fun this past week. From school trips to award ceremonies to good-by celebrations, Lowell area students had no reason to be bored as they counted down the days to summer vacation.
Let’s take a look at the past week.
Several schools had final field trips scheduled. Here, the kindergarten students from Alto Elementary School got up close and personal with the cows at Swiss Lane Dairy.
Meanwhile, the 2nd graders at Alto Elementary took a walking tour of Lowell. They stopped by LowellArts new gallery space as they made their way through town.
Over at Murray Lake Elementary School, the 3rd graders hit the road and visited the Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park.
The Alto Elementary 5th graders went even farther afield and rode in luxury to Greenfield Village.
The Bushnell Elementary School kindergarten class didn’t have to go far to have fun. They wrapped up their year with a picnic and play time at Creekside Kingdom.
For the final, full day of school at St. Patrick School, students gathered outside for a picnic lunch. But first, the 4th and 5th graders showed off their “Genius Hour” science projects to younger students. Alongside displays about volcanoes, electric circuits and catapults were projects on cow health and elephant toothpaste.
Cherry Creek Elementary School hosted a “Ninjas on the Run” experience as a final reward for students’ good behavior.
Other schools, such as Alto Elementary, held their field days.
Murray Lake Elementary students cooled off in the warm weather with a water fight.
The Murray Lake Elementary 5th Graders took a little time to play some golf too.
In recent days, area schools also recognized students who excelled throughout the year. Alto Elementary held a special assembly to recognize its 2016-2017 awardees.
The Alto Elementary Accelerated Reader Club seems to keep expanding. Look at all those kids who love a good book!
At St. Patrick School, the inaugural Teddy Bear Reading Scholarship was handed out to five students in K-4th grade. Teddy Bear, a therapy dog, visits St. Patrick School regularly to listen to students read. The scholarship recognizes those readers who have show a positive attitude, growth and stick-to-itiveness (aka dogged perseverance).
Teddy even put on a tie to hand out the awards.
At Alto Elementary, some honors involved good eating. These lucky students got to enjoy a pizza lunch with Principal Papes.
Of course, it wasn’t all fun and games. This past week was also a time for good-byes. Alto Elementary students each got a moment to wish Bonnie Gokey well as she starts her retirement.
Gokey is a beloved administrative assistant at Alto Elementary and has spent an impressive 50 years of her life at the school.
St. Patrick School said good-bye to its 124th graduating class. The 8th graders will go on next year to Catholic Central, West Catholic and Lowell high schools.
The St. Patrick School graduation night started with a Mass in which students filled all the church ministries.
Afterward, as is tradition, the 7th grade class hosted a reception for the outgoing graduates. During the night, diplomas were awarded, cake was eaten and a commencement address was given by art teacher Nicole Bosco.
Alto Elementary also said good-bye to students as its 5th grade heads to the Lowell Middle School.
When the final bell rang on Friday, high school students flocked to Balls Softee Creme for a sweet celebration.
While its always nice to have the summer off, we’re sure students won’t soon forget the good times they’ve had or the friends they’ve met. See you in August students!
