The Restless Viking: Skeleton Coast of the Great Lakes

This article was originally published on October 14, 2022 on The Restless Viking website.

The Skeleton Coast or “Graveyard of the Great Lakes” is a stretch of shore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan stretching from Whitefish Point to Grand Marais. It includes Vermilion, Crisp Point Light Station, Mouth of the Two Hearted River Life Saving Station and Deer Park Life Saving Station.

Over 200 shipwrecks are there and a string of lighthouses and life saving stations were built to help with the busy maritime traffic on Lake Superior.

Poppins and I explore Crisp Point, Vermillion Life Saving Station, Whitefish Point Light Station and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum (Michigan Shipwreck Museum).

Chuck and Martha Hayden, aka The Viking and Poppins, enjoy going on adventures off the beaten path. They also like to share their explorations with others. The Viking is a retired expedition leader while Poppins is a retired teacher. The two offer independent views of their journeys showcasing places, people, and cultures as they explore the world. Visit and follow them on their website and social media accounts. Website | Facebook | Instagram |YouTube
