For more than 30 years, the Franciscan Life Process Center, located at 11650 Downes St NE in Lowell, has been a place of healing, learning, and creativity for West Michigan. Nestled on 230 acres of scenic land, the center has served thousands of individuals through its four key programs: music therapy, counseling, a nationally recognized art workshop program, and its land stewardship initiatives.
Now, with a major renovation underway, the center is ensuring that it remains a welcoming and vibrant space for generations to come.
A Space Well Loved and Well Used
Since its construction in 1990 and official opening in 1991, the Franciscan Life Process Center has been a hub for not only its core programs but also for numerous community events, professional meetings, retreats, and rehearsals. Groups like Fountain Street Church, the Grand Rapids Women’s Chorus, and the Midwest Alphorns gather here each year to practice and prepare for performances. In fact, just last year, 84 different groups rented space at the center.
“Our building and grounds have been beautifully used,” says Sister Colleen Ann Nagle, Executive Director. “We’ve done so well in these first 30 years, and we want to keep this space just as beautiful for the next 30.”
A Renovation for Growth and Sustainability
With a growing number of visitors and a commitment to providing a high-quality experience, the center’s renovations aim to enhance both aesthetics and functionality. Updates include:
- A fresh coat of paint throughout the entire building
- New flooring
- An upgraded generator
- Air conditioning installed throughout the facility
- A redesigned front entryway to create a more welcoming environment
- Energy-efficient LED lighting
- A recently installed metal roof and boiler system
“We are thrilled about these improvements,” Nagle says. “They will allow us to serve more people while also ensuring our space is as sustainable as possible. It’s the wave of the future, and we need to be in union with that.”
Supporting the Mission
The renovations, which began in October 2024, are expected to be completed by summer 2025. The project has been made possible through a combination of grants from various foundations and the generous support of private donors and friends of the center. While additional funds are still needed, Nagle remains optimistic about the progress.
“People have watched us over the years and understand the needs of this community,” she says. “They see that what we do, we do well, and they want us to continue. We are so grateful for the support we have received.”

An Exciting Future Ahead
Despite the inevitable mess and minor disruptions that come with renovations, the center’s dedicated staff, students, and visitors have remained adaptable. With a Grand Rapids campus also operating at the Basilica of St. Adalbert, programs have continued smoothly throughout the renovation process.
Once renovations are complete, the center plans to host open house events, inviting both donors and the general public to see the improvements firsthand and learn more about its impactful programs.
“This is an exciting time for the center and the community,” Nagle says. “We can’t wait to see how these renovations unfold and continue welcoming people from West Michigan and beyond.”
From music therapy sessions to cross-country skiing on its scenic trails, the Franciscan Life Process Center continues to be a place where people find healing, inspiration, and community. Thanks to these renovations, its mission will shine even brighter for decades to come.
