Upcoming Mother Son and Father Daughter Dances to Raise Money for Lowell Athletes

There is a March 2 deadline to RSVP for the upcoming Mother/Son and Father/Daughter dances being hosted by two Lowell High School athletic groups.  Moms and sons can have an evening out on March 5 while dads and daughters will have their chance on March 11.

Rebel & Rockstar Theme for Mother/Son Dance

Boys who are in kindergarten through 5th grade in the Lowell Area Schools (LAS) as well as students at St. Patrick School received an invitation to the annual mother/son dance.  While local kids and their moms received the invite, those outside the district are also invited.

Moms and their son(s) will be hosted by the Boys Lacrosse team.  Jill DeCator’s youngest son is a junior at the high school and part of the team.  “My philosophy is that when your kids get involved in things, you as a parent have a responsibility to get involved as well.” she says of her role as parent coordinator of the event.  She continues saying, “I want my kids to have a great experience in whatever sports, clubs, etc. they are involved in. The best way to have a say in that and to contribute is to have a hand in leading.”

The dance is not just a fundraiser for the Boy Lacrosse team.  It is also a community service project that gives boys and their moms a couple hours of special time focused on having fun together.  Student athletes from the team are in charge of running each station with a parent volunteer to oversee. The players do the majority of the work including set up and cleanup.  During the event the high school students will run games, scoop ice cream, and help younger students arrange bouquets of flowers. “I’m always really impressed with how hard they work and the level of engagement they have with the younger boys.” says DeCator.

The annual event has taken place for a decade now, helping the Boys Lacrosse team raise funds while hosting a fun evening for moms and sons.  This year’s theme is Rebel & Rockstar. DeCator has typically come up with a handful of ideas on her own which would be fun for both moms and boys.  Her ideas are presented at a Parent Advisory Committee for the team where any additional ideas are also discussed and a final theme is decided upon.

DeCator feels there’s a lot of positivity surrounding the annual event.  It’s a great bonding experience for boys and their moms. It’s also an opportunity for boy moms to meet and chat.  The high school students are able to provide a service opportunity for the community as a way to give back. And the event introduces younger kids to lacrosse, which is still a fairly new sport.

The event is the biggest fundraiser for Boys Lacrosse each year.  Last year 208 moms and 256 boys were in attendance out of the approximately 800 K-5 boys in the district.  The team raised a little over $2,000 last year which was higher than the previous year. Overhead for the event is typically high as the group goes all out to create an enjoyable experience for those in attendance.  They provide a fun handout at the door, hire a professional DJ, serve ice cream sundaes with all of the fixings, run games with prizes, and the boys get to make a vase of fresh flowers for their mom.

The Boys Lacrosse team is a non-funded Varsity sport which means it does not get any funding from the school.  The team has to raise money on their own in order for the program to continue. Funding is needed for uniforms, equipment, bussing, ref fees, coaches and more.  Money is raised through fundraising, sponsorships and player fees.

The mother/son dance will take place on Thursday, March 5 from 6pm – 8pm in the main cafeteria at Lowell High School.  It is open to all boys in kindergarten through 5th grade and their mom. The deadline to register for the event is March 2.  Walk-ins are welcome but not guaranteed the ability to be able to make a flower bouquet in a vase to take home.

Father Daughter Dance for 2nd and 3rd Grade Students

The Lady Red Arrows Varsity Club will host a father/daughter dance for students who are in 2nd and 3rd grade.  This group of female students consists of those involved in any Varsity sport. They meet to discuss leadership and how it impacts sports young women play.  How leadership has a role in life outside of sports is also discussed. Some members of the group have had the opportunity to participate in the Women in Sports Leadership Conference and all members attend a luncheon that includes a guest speaking on the connection between athletics, leadership, and life beyond high school.

Olivia Johnson is one of the volunteer event coordinators for the dance.  She along with Athletic Director are pleased to host the yearly event. The dance is one of the main events the group hosts.  All participants in the Varsity Club will be at the dance running the various stations. “It is our group’s goal to exemplify leadership in all areas of life and we want our 2nd and 3rd grade young girls to have strong examples to look up to!” says Johnson.

Typically between 300-400 fathers and daughters come to the event each year.  Those who attend will be able to take part in a photo booth, have some sweet treats, have the opportunity to win a door prize and of course participate in dancing.  Funds raising through the course of hosting the dance go toward the opportunity for athletes to attend the Women in Sports Leadership Conference and host a luncheon with a speaker.  The group also seeks out attending additional leadership conferences when they are able to do so.

The father/daughter dance will take place on Wednesday, March 11 from 6:30pm – 8pm in the main cafeteria at Lowell High School.  It is open to girls in 2nd and 3rd grade and their dad. The deadline to register for the event is March 2.
