Vergennes Twp. Public Safety Millage Passes by 5 Votes

While most Lowell area municipalities didn’t have an August election this year, Vergennes Township electors did have two issues on the ballot today. The unofficial results are in, and here’s how residents voted.

Public Safety Millage Proposal for Fire Department Funding

Vergennes Township asked voters to approve a 0.7 mill public safety proposal to help pay its costs for the Lowell Area Fire Department. That proposal passed by a slim five-vote margin.

  • Yes – 378
  • No  – 373

State Senate Primary

There was also a primary election for the vacant Michigan State Senate seat for the 28th District. The district encompasses Vergennes Township as well as all of northern Kent County and a section along the eastern boundary of the county.

Overall, Keith Courtade won the Democratic primary and Mark Huizenga won the Republican primary. In Vergennes Township, the votes broke down as follows:

Democratic Party Primary

  • Keith Courtade – 114
  • Gidget Groendyk – 102
  • Write-in – 1

Republican Party Primary

  • Tommy Brann – 133
  • Kevin Green – 173
  • Mark Huizenga – 219

Township turnout for the election was 20.39%, according to the unofficial results.
