The Weather Outside is Frightful

The calendar indicates it’s December but so far in the Lowell community there hasn’t been any of the white frozen precipitation falling from the sky and accumulating.  However, it’s likely colder weather and snow will arrive soon.  Today’s winds are said to be bringing cold air this week.  The Lowell Police Department (LPD) is currently holding their 3rd annual Cold Weather Warrior drive aimed at helping students in the Lowell Area Schools stay warm this winter.

Battling Cold Weather
The LPD spends countless hours keeping Lowell safe.  But this December they’re also battling winter weather for students.  This is the third year Officer Gordy Lauren will gift cards and purchase new items from Meijer.  “I was approached by a community member three years ago with the idea of helping families in need of cold weather gear.”  he says of the start of the campaign.  “We talked with the schools and realized that there are several children that need jackets, hats, boots and other cold weather items.”  You never know what could happen if you share an idea.

A donation of Meijer gift cards are requested because each year the department works with schools in the district, who provide a list of students in need of cold weather gear.  The list includes sizes so items can be purchased specifically for the child in need.  Individual items are accepted but using gift cards to purchase new items knowing they will fit is preferred.

The last two years the department received about $1,400 in gift cards and gear, which allowed officers to help around 40 students.

A new pop machine was placed in the lobby of the Police Department in November.  Proceeds from people purchasing items for $1 will go toward Cold Weather Warriors.  Stop in for a cold drink any time of the year and help this effort.

The LPD will be collecting donations through the end of December.  If all of the students’ needs have not been met at that time they will continue until they’ve checked everyone off their list.  “Lowell is a very giving community and it shows when a program like this is started. We appreciate the support and are honored that we can be a part of this community supporting its citizens.” concludes Lauren.
