Weekend Events to Spread Holiday Cheer

Christmas is two weeks away.  The Lowell community has already kicked off the shopping season with Christmas Through Lowell.  Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived last weekend.  Colder temperatures and snow mean the outdoor ambiance will be perfect for eliciting holiday cheer during some events outside this weekend.  Or if you’d rather stay warm, check out the high school play.  Better yet, plan on attending all three of the following events and get some shopping done with an artistic flare!

The Merrie Christmas Show at Lowell High School

The annual Christmas play’s first curtain call will take place at 7pm on Thursday, December 11.  A show Friday evening will begin at the same time with the final performance taking place Saturday, December 13 at 10:30am.  Tickets can be purchased at the door for $5 each for the general seating event.

From the Lowell Performing Arts Center, “A group of lively traveling players are at your service as they take you on a spirited adventure through Christmas past and present. They have searched the globe for Christmas stories and songs that will amaze, thrill, and delight children of all ages.”  This family fun production is sure to entertain and get you ready for the holiday season – or keep you there.

Luminary Walk at Wittenbach Wege Center

A second annual event takes place this weekend.  Friday night is Date Night on the trail at the Wittenbach Wege Center (WWC).  It’s open to all ages, but there will be no additional activities geared toward families.  From 6pm – 9pm luminaries will placed along portions of the trail.  At the cabin you’ll be able to warm up by a fire.  If the weather cooperates, head out to the wetland observation deck to see if you can see the Geminid Meteor Shower.  At the main building hot chocolate will be available for $1 and hot cider for $2.  A $2/person or $10/family suggested donation at the door or trail head is also suggested.

Saturday is Family Night.  The suggested donation and drink prices remain the same.  The trails will be open from 5pm – 9pm.  During Family Night the cabin will also be host to a couple of activities.  String popcorn or make a pinecone birdfeeder ornament for the WWC tree.  At the main building nature inspired crafts will be available in addition to hot cocoa and hot cider.

This event has grown in popularity over the years.  Parking across the street at the high school may be necessary.  The path from the high school to WWC will be lit with volunteers assisting.

Nite of Christmas Cheer

Visit with Santa and check out activities along the Riverwalk on Friday from 5:30pm – 7:30pm.  Horse drawn carriage rides will be available as well as hot dogs, roasted chestnuts, cookies and hot cocoa, holiday 3D glasses, live reindeer, and warming fires.  This is also an annual event looked forward to by many in the community.   Come as a family or meet some friends to hang out and enjoy some evening entertainment and fun.

If you can’t make it Friday evening, Santa will also be taking visitors on Saturday from 10:30am – 1pm.

Flat River Gallery and Framing Event and LowellArts Holiday Artists Market

On Saturday, December 14, Rosemary Cheslock will be working with enamels from Noon to 3pm at Flat River Gallery and Framing.  Watch her work, ask questions, and even shop around for some gifts.

If you’re unable to attend the event on Saturday, the last Twelve Days of Christmas event at the gallery is Tuesday, December 17,  with a variety of artists.  [Information taken from the gallery’s press release.] Joella Miller will be working on a chainmail jewelry in argentium silver from 11 to 2:30pm. Our last day will feature Debra Reid Jenkins, again working in oil from 11 to 2:30pm. From 2:30 to 6pm, Brian Meuser will be working with acrylics doing abstracts on canvas.

The Holiday Artists Market is in full swing at LowellArts.  Over 50 area artists have items for purchase.  Artwork and other handmade items include pottery, painting, jewelry, glasswork, handbags, woodwork, ornaments, soaps, and more.  Plan on stopping by LowellArts before or after the event next door at Flat River Gallery and Framing!

The Holiday Artists Market is open Sunday and Monday noon until 5pm and Tuesday through Saturday 10am – 6pm through December 23.
