This Weekend in Lowell: Remember a Local Legend, Win Some Prizes

It looks to be fairly quiet in Lowell this weekend. However, rain is in the forecast so it might not be the best time to catch up on the yard work. Instead, stay dry by heading to LowellArts for an event honoring a local legend.

Celebration of Janet Y. Johnson

If you are at all familiar with the art scene in Lowell, you know Janet Y. Johnson. She was the driving force behind creating the art institutions serving Lowell today. She was a founding member of both LowellArts, the community’s non-profit arts council, and Flat River Gallery & Framing, a co-op where artists of all mediums can display and sell their work. Johnson was an accomplished artist herself and specialized in watercolor and acrylic paintings.

While Johnson passed away in February, you can still get acquainted with her work if you haven’t already. Through June 3, 2017, LowellArts is displaying an exhibition of her paintings. Plus, there will be a special celebration of her life tomorrow. The open house event will be an opportunity to not only see Johnson’s work but also hear stories about her life from those who knew her.

We would be remiss if we didn’t point out that while at the gallery, you could cross #8 off your scavenger hunt list. Just sayin’.

What: Community Celebration of the Life and Art of Janet Y. Johnson
Where: LowellArts, 223 W Main St.
When: Sunday, May 21 from 2-4pm
Cost: Free (Some of Johnson’s work will be available for sale next door at Flat River Gallery & Framing)

So Many Prizes Waiting to be Won

About that scavenger hunt…this would be a great weekend to snap a few pics and get in the running for hundreds of dollars in prizes. We have gift certificates to your favorite stores, free food and unique gifts to give away. Check out this post for the rules and the clues.

We also made a small change to make it easier to share your photos. While you can still upload your photos to Flickr, you can also post them to Facebook. Simply make a Facebook photo album titled Lowell’s First Look Scavenger Hunt. Make sure to change the privacy settings to public and then tag Lowell’s First Look in it so we can find it. Then, when you are out snapping photos of the scavenger hunt clues, you can easily upload them from your phone to the Facebook album.

We’ll let you know by June 5th if you’re a winner!
