This Weekend in Lowell: So Much to See and Do

This weekend in Lowell is packed with things to do. So let’s get right to it.

Last Weekend for Tony ‘n Tina

If you haven’t already wined and dined with Tony ‘n Tina, this is your last weekend to do so. And if you’re not sure who Tony ‘n Tina are, you’ll want to read all about the dinner theater production being put on by LowellArts Players. We also have a separate article with photos for those who want a sneak peek at the fun.

Heads-up parents: if this play were on television, it would be rated TV-14.

What: Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding, a dinner theater presented by LowellArts Players
Where: Larkins Other Place (look for the marquee by the corner of Main and Hudson)
When: Friday and Saturday (May 5 and 6) at 6:30pm – doors open at 6pm
Cost: $28-$32, dinner and dessert included. Cash bar available.

Important: Since this is a dinner theater, tickets must be reserved in advance so the appropriate number of meals are prepared. Call 897-8545 or visit the LowellArts website to RSVP.

Spring into the Past at Local Museums

Every year, the Tri River Museum Network coordinates a Spring into the Past event in which small museums across five counties open their doors and show off their exhibits. The theme for this year is “Fashion Through the Ages” so ladies, get ready to be grateful we no longer have to wear girdles.

It’s a great chance to see what our small town museums have to offer. Even better, admission is free!

What: Spring into the Past Tour
Where: 27 museums across Kent, Barry, Ionia, Eaton and Montcalm countries. Local stops include the Lowell Area Historical Museum, Fallasburg Historical Village, Alton Historic Church Museum and Bowne Township Museum. See all the locations here.
When: Saturday and Sunday (May 6 and 7) from 11am-5pm
Cost: FREE!

Reach for the Stars…or at Least Look at Them

Assuming the weather cooperates, there will be a public night at the Veen Observatory this Saturday. Hosted by the Grand Rapids Amateur Astronomical Association, the night will be your opportunity to see Jupiter, the Gibbous Moon and star clusters. If the weather seems iffy, call the Starwatch number at 897-7065 or visit the GRAAA Facebook page to make sure the event is still on before making the drive.

What: Public Night at the Veen Observatory
Where: 3308 Kissing Rock Ave SE, Lowell, MI 49331, USA
When: Saturday, May 6 from 9:30pm-12am
Cost: $3 for adults, $2 for kids ages 5-17 and free for the under 5 crowd. If you’re a member of the Grand Rapids Public Museum, you get in for FREE!

LowellArts Member Exhibition

LowellArts unveiled a new exhibit last week. It asked its members to submit their best work, and they didn’t disappoint. Pieces from more than 100 Lowell artists are on display, but LowellArts isn’t telling you who did what. That’s right, the theme of this exhibit is “Who’s Who?” Check out this list of participating artists (see anyone you know?) and then head to the Main Street Gallery to see if you can find their creation.

While you’re there, look for a special display of works by Janet Johnson. As a founding member of LowellArts and Flat River Gallery and Framing, Johnson was a pioneer in the local art community. She passed away in February, but her legacy lives on in this special exhibit.

What: Who’s Who and Janet Y. Johnson Tribute Exhibits
Where: 223 W Main St. (former location of Cousin’s Hallmark)
When: April 25-June 3, Tuesday-Friday: 10am-6pm, Saturday:10am-5pm, Closed Sunday and Monday
Cost: FREE

Garage Sales Galore

It’s that time of year when everyone is cleaning out the basement, garage and closets. Then, they are setting up tables, putting out their wares and hoping their unused items might be exactly what somebody else is looking for.

The big event for garage sale fans this weekend is the Eastgate Grand Slam. It’s when everyone who wants to have a garage sale in the Eastgate neighborhood schedules their sale, and everyone else leaves for the day. To get to the neighborhood, head west out of town on Fulton and then turn north on Settlewood. Of course, there are plenty of other sales scheduled around town too.

What: Garage sales
Where: All over town
When: Times vary but show up early for the best selection
Cost: Whatever you want to spend

Will you be having a garage sale in the next few weeks? You can list your sale in an upcoming Weekend in Lowell post. We’ll provide up to three lines to list your location, hours and a description of your sweet deals. Then it’ll get promoted on Facebook and our website to the nearly 10,000 people who visit our pages weekly. Your cost? Only $5! Email [email protected] to place your ad.

Coffee with Council

Finally, tomorrow morning is once again your chance to having a meeting of the minds with our local leaders. Coffee with Council is a low-pressure, informal way to discuss whatever city-related issue you’d like.

What: Coffee with Council
Where: Lowell Chamber of Commerce Building on the Riverwalk
When: Saturday, May 6 from 8-10am (drop in whenever you’d like)
Cost: FREE

Do you have an event or activity you think should be covered in our round-up? We’d love to include it so please contact us with all the details. Event information must be received by Thursday for inclusion in the Friday article.
