This Weekend in Lowell: Santa is Leaving Town

Between the frigid cold and current winter weather advisory, the best thing to do in Lowell this weekend may be to heat up some hot cocoa, pop in a movie or curl up with a good book. However, for those who want to get out of the house, there are a few fun options this weekend in Lowell.

Santa Goes Back to the North Pole

Most notably, Saturday is the last day to see Santa on the Showboat before he heads north to finish his final Christmas preparations. If you want to get in any last minute requests, he’ll be available from 10:30am-1pm on December 17th.

Santa’s room on the Showboat is warm and cozy, but the line to see him is outside on the Riverwalk. So break out the long underwear and bundle up the kiddies if you plan to go. After you see the big guy, you can grab some free hot chocolate and a cookie for the road.

While it’s always sad to see Santa leave town, we do hope he’ll take the arctic air with him.

Lowell High School Students Solve a Mystery

If staying inside is more your style, head up to the Lowell Performing Arts Center in the high school. Students from kindergarten through high school have been working hard getting ready to perform CSI: Christmas Scene Investigators.

It’s the latest Lowell high school production and promises to provide some affordable, family-friendly entertainment on this cold weekend. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door. You have two showtimes from which to choose:

  • Friday, December 16, at 7pm
  • Saturday, December 17, at 10:30am

Shopping, Dining and More

Of course, there is always plenty to do in Lowell even when there are no special events planned.

The downtown shops will be open and ready to help you cross a few more names off your list. Swing by the new LowellArts location at 223 W. Main St. for their Holiday Market or any of the other local retailers who offer one-of-a-kind gift options.

If all that shopping makes you hungry, Larkins, the Flat River Grill and Main Street BBQ are located right on the main drag or head down a little farther for lunch or dinner at Keiser’s. You can grab a beer or stop for coffee too if that’s more to your liking.

Looking for cheap weekend fun? The library is open until 5pm on Saturday and has a kids play area in addition to reading nooks and computers to keep everyone occupied. The Wittenbach/Wege Environmental Center trails are open from dawn until dusk, and there’s also the Lowell Area Trailway for those who prefer a paved, albeit snowy, path.

Many places are closed on Sunday, but that’s ok. We know you really want to be home watching the Lions take the lead early in the game, blow it by the third quarter and then win in the final two minutes. Are we right?

What will you be doing this weekend in Lowell?
