The downtown Lowell art hub is undergoing a rebranding and hoping to connect with more artists and art lovers.
Lowell Arts was formerly known as LowellArts and was founded in 1977 as the Lowell Area Arts Council. Housed in a gallery on the corner of Main and Broadway streets since 2016, the organization has promoted the arts and been a provider of artistic opportunities for the Lowell community and West Michigan. Facilitating classes, theater productions, and art shows are just a few of the things Lowell Arts does.
Executive Director Janet Teunis says she hopes that with the rebranding, Lowell Arts can better reflect upon their purpose and effectively communicate that to the public. She says the organization’s core pillars of “Experience, Learn, Volunteer and Give” clearly define their mission and vision.
“As we approach our 50th anniversary, we’re renewing our commitment to innovation and growth, ensuring that we continue to evolve with the changing needs of artists and art enthusiasts in our region,” Teunis says.
Lowell Arts is placing an emphasis on becoming a “regional hub” for the arts in West Michigan. They are a gallery and have a performance space for local uses, but they also seek to serve a broader audience.
They recently partnered with Ferris State University by having students design the new logo. Teunis hopes this relationship will bring fresh perspectives to Lowell Arts and also help reach new demographics.
“We hope that the rebranding helps to attract diverse audiences who might not have engaged with us before,” she says.
Lowell Arts also hopes to extend their online presence in order to engage audiences outside of Lowell and be more accessible to all of West Michigan.
The non-profit will still offer much to the local community and plans to remain a hub for community engagement and activities. They plan to expand volunteer opportunities to allow more community members to get involved, according to Teunis.
Lowell Arts also will continue to provide educational programs, including art classes for all ages, and sponsor events like the annual Fallasburg Arts Festival and Lowell Showboat Sizzlin’ Summer Concert Series.
Teunis says they are actively seeking partnerships with local businesses, schools, and other organizations to integrate art more deeply into the Lowell community. Also, the Lowell Arts Artist Market features Michigan artists and provides a platform for the community to engage with and support regional art in the weeks leading up to the Christmas holiday.
“Through these efforts, we aim to make Lowell Arts an integral part of the community’s identity and a source of pride for all residents.”
