As in many other communities, there is a fun sport sweeping across Lowell, and it’s none other than pickleball.
But what exactly is this quirky sport? According to Carter Dood, co-owner of Fusion Sports, pickleball is like a compact cousin of tennis and utilizes a ping-pong like paddle and a plastic ball with holes in it. Pickleball is fun, social and friendly. The rules are simple, and the game is easy to learn.
“I first tried pickleball when my grandfather invited me to play,” Dood shares. “What hooked me was the fact that pickleball doesn’t play favorites. It’s a game for everyone, no matter your skill level.”
Fueled by a passion for sports and a drive to strengthen community bonds, Fusion Sports, the brainchild of Dood and his business partner Jarod Dykstra, has launched a pickleball league right here in Lowell.
“Our game plan is simple – partner up with communities and funnel a portion of the registration fees back to the parks for reinvestment,” explains Dood. “Take Lowell, for example. Twenty percent of all registration fees from the league go straight back to the park fund, ensuring the courts stay well maintained.”
What’s in it for local businesses? According to Dood, the possibilities are endless. “We’ve already seen local businesses rally behind our tournaments, and we’re hungry for more partnerships,” he states. “As our league gains momentum, we’re eager to team up with businesses that share our vision of community growth and vitality.”
Looking ahead, Fusion Sports is gearing up to expand its playbook with plans to introduce an array of sports to its lineup. And mark your calendars because the first-ever Lowell Bridgefest at Riverfront Park, slated for the second weekend of August, promises a whirlwind of fun with Fusion Sports hosting cornhole tournaments and spikeball showdowns.
