FROM: Affordable Housing Makes a Positive Impact on Community

Flat River Outreach Ministries provided this article as part of a series highlighting the need for affordable housing in the community.

The greater Lowell community is in the midst of a housing shortage, similar to the rest of our state and nation.

Housing is complex, and housing that is affordable even more so. But how did we get here and what does it mean?

Essentially there is an imbalance with supply and demand, an article by Blu House Properties shares, the result of strong economic growth in West Michigan.

In the past few years, many new businesses have moved to the Lowell area and others have expanded, bringing more employees.

All of this is great, but housing that is affordable has not kept pace, and our neighbors in need are impacted most.

The 17-units of affordable and supportive housing Flat River Outreach Ministries (FROM) is preparing to build will directly impact our neighbors who need it most.

“If we can get you in a good place where then you can now focus on employment, and feeding yourself and your family and advancing yourself, I think that’s the best place to start,” John Barnett, FROM Client Services Coordinator, said.

But affordable housing isn’t just about homes—it’s about community, stability, and opportunity. Here’s why it matters:

  • Strengthens Families: Affordable housing gives families a foundation to thrive. Parents can focus on their jobs, build careers and provide for their loved ones. That allows kids to focus on learning and dreaming big.
  • Boosts the Local Economy: When residents have affordable living options, they can spend more in local shops, restaurants, and businesses—fueling growth for our entire community.
  • Builds a Brighter Future: Stable homes create hope and opportunity, helping individuals and families break the cycle of poverty.
  • Fosters a Stronger Community: Affordable housing brings diversity and vitality to Lowell, making it a place where everyone can belong and contribute.

Imagine this: A child growing up in a secure home grows into a confident adult with the resources to provide stability for their own family—creating a ripple effect for generations to come. That’s the goal. Together, we can create a Lowell where every family has a foundation for hope and opportunity.
